Anyone have this working? It installs okay from IE, but I haven't got any sound (I use the alsa driver for kde) and it always locks up when the autoupdate feature tries to load a new codec.

Try using the Wine OSS driver (with ALSA's OSS emulation).
It is also possible to run this without IE installed although it requires some tricks. It still runs very buggy in Wine though.
Oof, that is some time ago :)
I don't know if this works with current versions of RealPlayer. I believe it should be possible to get through the installer without having an IE installation (the installer doesn't check for IE).
After that, when you run the program, it will probably give an error about that it can't find IE. The program will still run though, although it won't show much (only a small weird piece of the mainscreen). To get the player to show, I believe some combination of alt+button (to open a menu) worked.
Both in MS Windows and Wine without IE, allowed me to play Real media files this way.
Hope this helps!
