Three-Month Update Kills Mac Compatibility?

New client installs, but does not run.

Recently, RO underwent a three-month long update. It returned live to the public on the 3rd of February, 2020. Players are required to re-download the client ( Ragnarok Online Client Download Link ) in order to play the game with the updates. Although the date listed under the download link is still October 18, 2019, the client file is in fact the new client file meant for download. Unfortunately, the game doesn't yet seem to be playable via CrossOver, and perhaps any other bottling software due to said updates.

After updating CrossOver to v 19.0.1, I managed to install the Ragnarok Online into its own bottle via the usual installation process. I didn't experience any issues during the process. The only difference is just using the new client file as the installer.

You will find an error dialogue box upon clicking "Play" to run the game. Whatever changes made in recent updates to the game are seemingly not supported by CrossOver, and I'd assume any other intermediary software of the sort.

I'm sorry to announce that the new version of the IRO Renewal client is indefinitely incompatible with CrossOver/Wine because, like the Transcendence client, it incorporates Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). Gravity have adopted EAC to prevent the use of bots and unauthorised client modifications. The European version of the client is also incompatible with CrossOver/Wine because it incorporates software similar to EAC.

As far as I'm aware, it's not possible to bypass EAC because it's highly sophisticated and is integrated with the Ragnarök Online server. Regardless, bypassing EAC would violate the IRO terms of service. Additionally, it's not possible to enhance CrossOver/Wine to enable EAC to run because EAC is specifically designed to detect CrossOver/Wine.

As it's currently impossible to run the International or European Ragnarök Online clients under CrossOver/Wine, and as IRO blocked access from Europe (where I live) in May 2018, I've decided to abandon (1) my guides for playing Ragnarök Online under CrossOver/Wine and (2) the development of the IRO custom installer. The guides will remain available as a reference, but they won't be updated.

It's unfortunate that Gravity chose the most inimical option to prevent the use of bots, but it also shouldn't be surprising to anyone who has experienced their treatment of their customers over the years since IRO launched. If you're unhappy about Gravity's decision to permanently preclude the playing of Ragnarök Online on Linux and macOS, then I encourage you to voice your opinion via the WarpPortal forum.

That's quite some news. Thank you for the detailed update, and thank you for the years of support you've provided players who either don't or can't play RO on Windows.

All the best.
