How to keep sounds on?

Hi,

Running Q15 on 10.10.4. Used to be that if you set sounds on in preferences, when you opened up the program the next time, the sounds would be there. Now, each time everything is muted and I have to go back and change prefs. if I want to get the "ka-ching!" Is this something new with Yosemite, and if so has anyone found a workaround??
