1628 Error

OK. First off, I don't want to seem redundant, but I have put in a support ticket about this for my personal benefit, I have posted this on the Advocate forum for CodeWeaver's benefit, and now I will post it here in case any of the general public have any ideas that might help.

-------------BEGIN ACTUAL QUESTION------------
Are there any definitive answers about getting Quicken 2004 to install reliably? I've tried FC1, FC2, Mdk 9.2, and Mdk 10.0 Official (all using CXO 3.0.0). The only time I was able to avoid the 1628 error was on Mdk 9.2. I had to do the following:

  • Fresh install of CXO
  • Install Office 2000 (which I'm borrowing from someone--I don't want to have to use this in the future...)
  • Install IE 6
  • Install Quicken

Any change in the order would cause it to fail. Even Office install would fail if IE 6 was installed first. Any ideas?

I got it to work (finally - 4 days no real help from the Ticket system) on FC2.

This is 2004 Basic on CD.

I tried everything! moved stdole*.tlb files from Win XP (idea from WineHQ forum), rolled back to a 2.4 kernel (worth a try but a REAL pain in the ass to do in FC2), etc...

Finally stumbled on the following. I made a ~/qinstall directory. I copied the entire CD into that directory. Then 'chmod +x -R ~/qinstall' (doesn't seem to work otherwise). I pointed the CXO installer to '~\qinstall\install.exe' ('~\qinstall\Disk1\qsetup.exe' gives a 1628 error). It worked! And I'm not sure why! In my testing with Suse 9.1 (which I ran before I switched to FC2) it installed flawlessly from CD.

It may have to do with the fact that GNOME on FC2 copies files from CD as Read Only (I don't know if KDE does this - I know it was never an issue like in GOME...) perhaps the installer hung because it was copying a file it needed into "fake_windws" and then couldn't "write" to it or something...
