CX 5 Install Instructions....

With the new release of CX 5, there are some minor changes in how to get things working nicely, as well as some tricks...

First off, THANKS to the CX staff for an excellent release in CX 5!! It is fast and stable! Very Good Work 😉

 1. Install CX (I prefer the loki install from user acct).
 2. From CX Configuration menu, select DCOM95 and install (all you need is an internet connection, it will download and install for you). DCOM may not be needed, but it seems to have a way of breaking some apps like update agents etc, so i would definitely install it.
 3. From CX Config menu, install Internet Explorer 6 (only need internet again).
 4. From CX Config mneu, select Quickbooks Pro, and make sure installation disk is in drive, follow prompts.
 5. Wait for all installation to finish and you should have a working copy.

Suggestion, disable your internet connection for quickbooks (select netscape as default browser may work, or phony proxy info). This will disable unauthorized updates (different from automatic updates) which intuit may use to degrade usability to encourage upgrading (unless you need Quickbooks to connect to the net for payroll services etc.).

This post describes how to apply previously applied updates (to windows installs) if they have "updated" data files so as to make them inaccessible to default CX Quickbooks installs.

-And-

How to apply updates which have downloaded in a current install but have not applied properly (applies to most updates download in a non-windows environment-may be needed regularly...see #4 and onwards).

If you have downloaded an update which has not applied from within CX Quickbooks Pro, -OR- if you have the "download directory" from the most recent install that affected your data files (normally C/Program Files/Intuit/QuickBooks Pro/download for windows and /home/your_username/.cxoffice/win98/drive_c/Program Files/Intuit/QuickBooks Pro/download for Linux) move the previous download directory with ALL subdirectories to your CX QuickBooks Pro director and then skip to #4. Otherwise...

1.Start Quickbooks Pro using icon installed by CX 5.
2.Open a sample company (a company must be open for QB to updated executables).
3.Update quickbooks using File-Update-etc.. (this will actually only download the updates.

4.Make sure QuickBooks Pro and any other CX or wine occurrences are closed.
5.Open a terminal window
6.Change to CX directory containing “wine” (normally this will be /home/your_username/cxoffice/bin) using the command cd /home/your_username/cxoffice/bin
7.Execute the update file (qbpatch.exe) located in the “.target” directory of your QuickBooks Pro installation. The command should look something like this: ./wine "/home/your_username/.cxoffice/win98/drive_c/Program Files/Intuit/QuickBooks Pro/download/Patch/.update/.target/qbpatch.exe"
8.Progress may stop without windows closing once update reaches 100%. Everything should be ok to close after it reaches this point if the update windows do not close automatically after a minute or two.

You should now have a fully functional and updated version of QuickBooks Pro.

Good Luck !

Several Suggestions:

 1. Make regular (at least at the end of each use) backups. To do this compress the file with a name like MyBusiness2006_Jan_12a.tar, or simply copy (the MyCompanyName.QBW file to another directory appending date or order info as suggested above).

2.Use the following procedure to avoid improperly closed files (due to cached filesystem transactions i suspect):
a. From the File Menu select Close Company/Logoff.
b. Then again from the File Menu select Exit.
c. See #1 😉
This should help ensure properly closed data files.
