I also confirms it works

It seems to work fine for me on my 13" MacBook Air.
It's like DOOM3 really, it will fail unless you patch so you don't have to use the DVD.

Here's how I got it work (I don't care for multiplayer, so I didn't install punkbuster).
I'm running 10.1.0 Crossover Games.

  1. Create a bottle called Quake4.
  2. In the Quake4 bottle, install the DirectX Developer Pack from the Runtime Support Components.
  3. In the Quake4 bottle, install Quake4 as "Other Application" by specifying the Setup.exe file. The installer asks you to specify your serial, and if you want to install Punkbuster. I didn't bother installing Punkbuster.
  4. Once installed, it tries to launch Quake4 and fails. At this stage no short cuts are created.
  5. Re-run the installation in the Quake4 bottle. It will complain the cdkey.dll file is missing. Just click OK and ignore.
  6. Now the short cuts are created, but it still doesn't work. This is normal as like with DOOM3 it needs the patch so you don't run it from the DVD.
  7. Download the Quake4-1.4.2 patch, and install this as "Other Application" in the Quake4 bottle.
  8. Once finished it creates Quake Single Player and Quake Multiplayer shortcuts.

I haven't tried Quake 4 Multiplayer, but the Quake 4 Single player seems to work fine.
I copied over my old gamesaves to carry on where I last left of back in 2008, and am happily fragging the strogg 😊

I hope this helps,

Rob

Thanks to Robert's instructions, Quake 4 works for me, too. I'm only about 10 minutes into the game, but no issues with single player mode so far. (Runs great on my system!)

I did have one installation issue. My copy of Quake 4 is on four CDs and the installer would always error out on CD1. I got around this issue by copying CD1 to a folder on my hard drive, then adding the contents of /Setup/Data/q4base/ from discs 2-4 to the same location in the CD1 folder. I don't know why, but this allowed the installation process to get past the point where it failed before and install as described in Robert's post.

So glad that I can finally play this game!

That said, because the installation does NOT work flawlessly (as described in Robert's instructions), I do not think Quake 4 deserves a Gold Metal. It's a very solid Silver.

-Fred.
