That's some sort of copy-protection or anti-cheat scheme that is deliberately working to detect if it's running on real Windows directly on the hardware. So, it seems designed to fail in something like CrossOver, where there's no real Windows OS, or (from the sounds of it) in Parallels or VMWare, where Windows is running virtualized.
The window title is "WinLicense" and googling for that is somewhat informative.
yeah but, the other guy did manage to get this running on crossover for linux. So, the description saying it's compatible with crossover is only worth for linux version maybe?!

you can see the gold medal was against linux (and an older entry for
Mac saying 'known not to work')...is this a CD/DVD based installation?
