I've been getting an error message in Portal and Half-Life 2 and from what I can see it is related to changing the resolution to the max my display goes to (1920x1080) and then playing the game, also, the game crashes before giving the error. If I change the resolution at the main menu and then load a game it crashes and gives the error message and if I change the resolution after loading a game the error message appears.

It might be misdetecting you videoram -- or it doesn't  

like the dx level you're using ... but, we probably need to
now your machine specs first (platform/OS version/videocard)
before anything becomes meaningful..

Have you read the tips&tricks here about starting it with -dxlevel 80 ?

Yes, I have tried the -dxlevel 80 and right, specs.

Mid 2009 MacBook Pro
Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2
2.66 Ghz Intel Core Two Duo
4GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

But the weird part is it has been working just fine. It stopped working after I installed HL2 (which also doesn't work).

I was starting to think it is probably this issue with MacOSX ;

But now seeing you say it used to work before you installed HL2,
I'm starting to wonder if this issue has another facet to it....

The Steam Portal release did get an update or two the other day;

You have to be careful things like that don't make it look like it
was something else (when it was infact just the update)...

It's be interesting to know if you can recreate the example...ie;
backup HL2, remove the HL2 game content from Steam, does Portal work
again...something like this...

I have tried removing HL2 from Steam and it still doesn't work. Also, I know it's not the Portal update because I played through the entire thing after the update. I'll try removing everything from Steam and try again.

EDIT: Ok, so I've uninstalled both HL2 and Portal and re-downloaded Portal and now it gets stuck at the loading screen before the main menu. I'm going to try re-installing Steam.

Or better yet, create a new bottle and put in it a fresh copy of Steam and Portal.

Try some of the launch option codes in the "Tips and Tricks" section,
they might help?!? 😕
