I've gotten Portal running great with Codeweavers. It's fairly smooth, and completely playable. The only problem I'm having is that there's no sound. Is there a way to enable sound for the game that I'm missing?

For me it works with sound. The only thing I had was, that sometimes it was a bit choppy but still had sound. Sorry can't help just wanted to mention that it is possible to get sound.
The Steam GUI has recently been updated to use audio itself (e.g. voice chat). With the OSS audio driver, only one process can access audio at a time and since Steam is accessing it, the game can't. ALSA can handle multiple clients, but Wine's ALSA driver can have problems causing the choppy sound.
Our best current advice is to use the OSS driver, but use winecfg to configure things so Steam can't access the audio driver. Instructions can be found here: http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?forum=1;app_id=2036;mhl=7320;msg=7089#msg7320
We're working to improve things for the next release of CrossOver.
Hmm... I've restarted my machine and since then Portal works with sound, although it is a bit choppy. Thanks anyway for your help.
Yes I also have sound working for this game but it crackles in winecfg I have Alsa Driver Selected Hardware Acceleration is set to FULL Default sample rate set to 48000 bits per sample set to 16 and driver emulation checked. My sound card is a RealTek ACL861
