error on steam: cannot find translation files

So, I got Port Royale 2 on steam; it's on sale right now. It installs fine, but it doesn't run.

You can hear the music and the mouse cursor turns into a cutlass. But after about 2 seconds an error pops up: "Cannot find translation files." Then the program's debugger starts plus another window, which is just empty. It makes the game hang.

Essentially, this is the same behavior as Windows users experience on steam according to this thread:

Apparently, the solution there is to add the executable to the data execution prevention (DEP) ignore list.

I've no idea what that is and how to do that in crossover though.

Any ideas?
