Black/white screen but sound works on Crossover 13

Mac OSX 10.9.3
Crossover 13.0.1

So I installed the GOG version of PTB which was relatively simple. I then created the commands in the menu linking to popTB.exe and popTBUW.exe as instructed (instead of the d3d versions.

I also set "emulate virtual desktop 800x600" in the bottle control panel.

When I start the game, however, it occupies the whole screen and the screen goes completely white. The sound still works fine, so I know the game isn't dead, but the graphics aren't working.

If I then select "use legacy X windows system", and do it again, the game appears in a window (as it should have in the first place) but the screen is completely black (and the music plays in the background).

I really want to get this game working! It was my childhood favourite!

OK so I fixed the problem, and will leave the solution here for future reference.

The trick was not to use the Crossover Tie supplied by PaulTheTall. Basically you install it as "Other Application" into a new WinXP bottle. It'll create all sorts of shortcuts but ignore them. Once the installation is finished, go to Programs -> Run Command and point it at popTB.exe. Then save it to your commands menu.

Then make sure you tell Crossover to emulate a virtual desktop of a certain size (I made sure it was 4:3 because that's all populus can really deal with). I also checked Use Legacy X Window System (or some such), for otherwise Populus would be full screen and would wreak havoc with the adjustment on my monitor. It was also stretched because my monitor is 16:9.

Hope that helps.

Hi there,

I followed the instructions, up until the point I tried to run command and choose the .exe file. When I open "browse", the files disappear and I can't find them by searching. Do you know why that might be happening? It's like my computer is hiding them from me. And when a "GOG.com" file did appear, it was different, with just the Populous applications, but no .exe file.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?
