I've been trying to get this game to work, but I am having no success. I am new to reporting things to this site, but will supply anything that is needed (with a tutorial please)

Info on the comp:
Wine: 1.3.28
Crossover Games: 10.3.0 (I believe)

tried my version, which was, err, downloaded, from way back when. I then figured it might be me, so I donwloaded the demo (found here: http://www.fileplanet.com/11510/10000/fileinfo/Populous:-The-Beginning). After downloading and installing the demo, upon starting the program, it crashes wine right away.

The bottle is a win98.

Any help would be great.

Hi...

...the demo runs fine on my linux rig, nv9800gt, nvidia 290.10
drivers. The game has 2 screenmodes afaict 640x480 & 800x600. As
I have no idea of what computer/OS/video card/chipset you have,
and have -no- idea why you mention wine-1.3.28 (this is a crossover
forum, not a wine forum), the only advice I can give you is to
enable 'emulated virtual desktop' for the bottle via the Wine
Configuration tool...

Cheers!

Sure, I wasn't positive if the wine version made a difference or not.

Computer: Acer Aspire 6920
OS: Ubuntu 11.10
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS (512MB)
Ram: 4gb

I've done the emulated virtul desktop. All it does starts up and asks to do software graphics or direct3d, however direct3d is unable to be checked

...for the record, the version of wine CXG-10.3 is based unpon,
is wine-1.3.9 -- if you're talking about a systemwide install
of wine, that has nothing to do with crossover - the two sets
of software are mutually exclusive...

...you still haven't indicated which video drivers you are
using ; you will need the proprietary nvidia drivers installed.
I did see there was a hardware/software setting utility, but
didn't need it as the program detected D3D without issue - so
I guess at missing video card drivers...

Cheers!

So, I found the issue. Of course, it is user error. But at least this may help anyone else (noob) who runs into this.

**Don't start the program via the "desktop", use the run command and start via the program file.

Cheers everyone
