Stuff that does not work/is suboptimal

(everything not listed here is assumed to be working unless tested otherwise)

  • Video Slideshow Generation (The configuration screen for this works, but crashes on actual movie creation) Steps to reproduce: Select some images, => Create video slideshow => choose a song + a transition mode (time lapse for ex.) etc. => create video : crash
  • dock icon is low quality, so looks bad in the dock. If you care about looks and don't mind using the icon from picasa web uploader for the mac you can use the following procedure to achieve this. This assumes you have downloaded/installed Picasa Web Uploader for the mac. It doesn't have to be in "Applications" simply getting it without running it is fine too.
  • Right click the picasa web uploader .app, select "information".
  • click on the icon in the upper left so it has a blue shine around it.
  • press cmd + c
  • no go to picasa3.app in you crossover directory (if you don't know where it is, use spotlight to find it)
  • right click, => information => left click on the picasa icon => cmd + v
Congratulations, you now have a nice picasa icon in you dock (after restarting picasa)

I'm using crossover mac pro 7.1.0 / picasa 3.0.0 built 57.4400
-> basically works fine
-> photoviewer working (IMHO no one really needs this app...)
problems:

  • no avi displayed
  • "locate on disk" in context menue not working (picture folder on mac drive, not sure wether that's the problem)

So far no other problems.
Ciao, dark VOID

Watch folders do not appear to work beyond the top-level (Picasa 3 - not beta, Crossover 7.1.1, Mac OS X 10.5.5). It does not find photos in any sub-folders on directly in the folder that has been enabled for monitoring.

I second N Banek's post:
The Folder Manager only works if a folder is manually selected, even if it is inside a watched folder.
There have been similar issues like that on Windows with Picasa 2 before, so I'm not sure if this is a Picasa issue or a Crossover issue.

But on the other hand:
Any picture editing is nice and fast, even on a slow Mac Mini 😊

Watch folders works fine IF you select them using the Y: drive link. It does not correctly see the Pictures and Desktop folders as listed in the folder hierarchy.

Mapped drives don't show up as letters, they show up as paths (letters appear correctly in Picasa2 but not 3).

Export function does not appear to work, nor does 'Locate on disk'.

Otherwise program works as expected.

Update:
I installed it on another Mac yesterday, and on this Mac iPhoto was used a lot, so the pictures in question were all stored away deeply in the user folders.
So I created a link in Crossover to use drive letter D: for the path (I think) /Users/myuser/Pictures/iPhoto Library/
Once I used this shortcut in Picasa 3 and played around with it for a bit, all of a sudden I had all subfolders in Picasa, even though I had only selected maybe a quarter of them!

I will play with this further, but this may not only give some insight into how to fix the issue, but also a possible workaround.

I'll post again once I was able to confirm this behavior for sure.

Confirmed!

If you assign a drive letter to your main picture folder in Crossover and add it to the Folder Manager in Picasa 3, it will go into subfolders!

Instructions:
In Crossover, click the menu CONFIGURE, then MANAGE BOTTLES.
Select your bottle on the left, then click CONTROL PANEL on the right.
Select WINECFG and click LAUNCH SELECTED ITEM.
Once the Wine Configuration panel opens, click the tab on top called DRIVES.
Click ADD, and a new drive letter will be created (in my case D:).
Click the BROWSE button and then locate your picture folder, e.g. /Users/myuser/Documents/My Pictures/
Click OK.
Launch Picasa 3.
Click the menu TOOLS and FOLDER MANAGER (in Picasa, not Crossover).
Now click through all the folders that are showing - in my case, they all started with /Users/myuser/Library/Application Support/Crossover/ ... and so on.
Go through all of them and watch the folder name on the right above the 3 round scan buttons - one of the folders will end in the drive letter you just created, in my case it ends in .../d:/
Select that folder and press SCAN ALWAYS on the right, then OK.
Picasa should scan the folder now.

If you add a new folder inside your picture folder, Picasa may not detect it immediately.
I found that opening the Folder Manager again and without making any changes clicking OK will prompt Picasa to try and find more pictures immediately, and I got the newly copied folders added to the list.

There is a regular Forum thread about this issue - I'll post my findings in there, too, so the person who had written about the same problem (and future searchers) can access this information.

Importing pictures from camera does not seem to work. My camera (Canon EOS 400) does not show up on the device list.
(Picasa 3, Mac OSX 10.5.5)

Super! Thanks a lot. I didn't think about that.

Is anyone experiencing the inability to playback videos in Picasa 3? I get sound, but blank screen.

Videos will not play if the video codec is not installed.
I have no idea if you actually can install video codecs in Crossover...
You can try creating a video file with no compression - theoretically, it should play.
(Unless Picasa uses parts of Windows for video playing)

Picasa 3 does not play video on my Macbook.

Worse, it imports as a single JPG frame, so you don't know it ever was a movie. The only indication that it ever was a movie is that the name of the JPG begins with MVI.

I'm new, evaluating Cross Over, don't know if I should be discouraged, but not having (AVI) video playing is significant.
