PW - Graphics Issues

Twice tonight I've been playing, and the video of the game suddenly goes to various lines of different colors. Not all horizontal, some vertical, some boxes. Nothing of the game can be seen. The entire monitor of my Macbook Pro then has grayish lines across it. My only option at that point is a hard reset. I wish I could give a screen shot but the machine is unresponsive.

This happened twice when my character was attempting to turn. Once in a city and once in the wilderness. I have a Macbook Pro with an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. Thanks for any help you can provide!

I should add, as it just happened again, it isn't grayish lines, it's a flashing on the screen. I can still see my desktop but its flashing over the entire screen, not just the window that has PW running. This always happens just after the image in the game goes all crazy.

I'm quite excited to be able to play on a mac, and I'm seriously considering buying Crossover (on trial now), but if this can't be resolved I'll have to pass. I hope you guys can help, I'd love to give you my money! 😀

Is it a kernel panic? Does it look like the images in this article?

It sounds very odd. I suspect it may be a hardware issue, like maybe your GPU overheating. You can try using something like smcFanControl to both monitor your system's temperature and keep your fans up to keep it cool.

Is the system completely unresponsive? In particular, typing Command-Option-R ought to force CrossOver out of full-screen mode. It's sort of an escape hatch if a game leaves you stuck in full-screen mode. After you're out, you can access the Manage Bottles window from the Configure menu. You can use tools in there, like the Task Manager control panel or the Quit Bottle and Force Quit Bottle buttons, to kill the stuck game.

If that doesn't work, then you should be able to force quit CrossOver itself using Command-Option-Escape followed by Return.

If none of those work, then this is beyond the ability of user-level software like CrossOver to achieve. It must be a more fundamental problem like the hardware, a bug in the OS kernel or in kernel-level software like the graphics drivers.

It doesn't look like any of those images. its not a message, its just colors displayed randomly in the PW window, and flashing across the whole screen. It's completely unresponsive to keyboard commands, the only option I can really find is to simply power off.

I'll try your suggestions about the fan. I've never worked with smcFanControl but I assume its something either on the system I can find or online via a site?

Thanks greatly for your help!

Yeah, smcFanControl is a third-party tool and Google will help you find it.

The other thing to consider is that certain models of Macs have known issues with their GPUs failing due to thermal issues: [link=http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377][/link].

I now believe its something else entirely. I rolled up a new character in the game, and I found that I never have the problem until I'm in one of the "capital cities" in the game. I'm assuming the volume of people in there is the issue, but that seems extremely random as World of Warcraft (installed natively in MacOS) never gave me that problem (and had substantially larger numbers of people in each city).

It does however appear to be a problem related to that. Is it possibly some problem with Crossover and the way its processing the amount of data?

OK, apparently it was that i was playing in a windowed mode. Once I started playing full screen I haven't had this issue. Strange but that fixed it!
