The default installation of openAL doesn't seem to create the proper regestry notes. You need to download it from the openAL download[link=http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx][/link] site and install it again (on the same bottle).
OpenAL doesn't install properly under cxg 8 as it did under 7.2. The game won't start without it.
Which version of openAL are you mentioning?
This happens in Windows as well.
I was able to play Penumbra under windows without issues.
I'm not sure what version of openAL but the one that comes with the game when you download from steam doesn't install properly. I think it's the same version as the one you get from the openAL website.
