Keith and myself have had discussions about this issue, and tried a few
things in attempt to resolve it -- you can read about these things here;
http://www.codeweavers.com/support/forums/general/?t=26;msg=66954
Cheers!
In answer to your request for a demo version of PagePlus 11 please see
http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/PagePlus/default.asp
There is a much earlier free version that still has the problem
Thanks for your interest
Hi,
Thanks for that -- I'll give it a whirl a bit later on and
try to discover what exactly the issue might be...
Cheers!
Hi Keith,
Well, I did get the demo you linked to running...fonts and all...however,
I was using one of the latest nightly builds at the time ;
install-crossover-pro-9.020091104-unstripped.sh
(with the crossover 9 release a close future juncture, I figured it'd
make sense to test against this version build)
The bottle make-up is a bit haphazard and over the top (I used a semi
prepared bottle I was experimenting on something else with), but for
sure PP-11 needs IE installed into the same bottle. (wine-1.1.32 did
immediately try to download gecko when I tested that angle)...
The bottle I used, is using the win2000 profile.
Using winecfg, I have set 'Emulate a virtual desktop' ON (to avoid hassles with my twinview setup)
The following items appear normally in a fresh win2000 bottle;
Crossover HTML engine
Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable
The following service packs/dependencies were added to this bottle;
Microsoft Directx Runtime
Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Redistributable
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
Internet Explorer 6.0 (also installs msis31, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1)
Then I installed the demo of PagePlus you linked to -- it immediately spawn an
ieframe based online registration procedure, which I duly completed, it all seemed
to work and my email had the online reg.key in under 30seconds, once entered, the
program was happy to run and the fonts were all seemingly being rendered.
You might try the same procedure using crossover 8.0 and see if it works there
with your PP-11 version. If not, you could try the same dance with one of the
nightly builds, which (as an advocate) you can download from here ;
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/advocate_center/download/nightly/
Post back with your results using the above procedure(s) and see if what
holds true for the demo, holds true for version 11 ...ie; see if you can get
the demo of this app going like I have done first, just to make sure our
system makeups are 'on the same page', and if the demo -does- work, try you
version....good luck!
Cheers!
Hi Don
The following software install's into the win2000 bottle okay
Microsoft Directx Runtime
Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Redistributable
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
But I get a warning about IE6 being incompatible with the bottle settings when I go to install it.
Do I just ignore the warning?
I also assume that prior to installing the SE & 11 version of pageplus, I could just copy the win2000 directory
in .cxoffice to something new and install to both rather than have to go through the install steps again.
Keith
Hi again,
Was your attempt using crossover-8.0? (iirc it acted like this) If so, you might
trying leaving everything as is, using winecfg to set the windows version back
to win98, then installing IE6 with things running in that guise (hopefully it'll
complete cleanly), then use winecfg to set the bottle profile back to win2000
again before installing the software proper...
Keep me posted...
Cheers!
Yes I am trying with Crossover 8.0.0 - I tried using wincfg to change the bottle type to win98 from win2000, but it still gave me a warning when I started to install IE6. Crossover now seems unstable when I go to check with winecfg or add software with install - just keeps the hour glass on for a long time
Eek...that doesn't sound at all good, perhaps the bottle has somehow become
corrupt...you might try deleting the bottle and trying afresh - IE6 should
install (ensure you have emulated desktop on)...I'll rollback to CO-8.0 and
see how the PP demo behaves there...
Cheers!
Crossover 8.0.0 now very sick I cannot configure any of my bottles, just ignores the click of the configure icon.
also tried copying a bottle and it took an age to do the copy and is now stuck on the freshing stage.
Okay I deleted the win2000 bottle and its copy and things are behaving themselves again.
If its okay with you I will wait to see how you get on with Crossover 8.0.0 and PagePlus SE
before experimenting again. Obviously your much more experienced and less likely to stray off the
straight and narrow.
Back to this one....pretty much the same procedure outlined above using the nightly build,
does in fact hold true for CO-8.0 ; however, PP SE has issue in both releases, it seems a
bit more stable in the nightly build environment...
Wine-1.1.32 is a bit better again, but gecko wouldn't do the job it wanted - IE6 had to
be installed there as well -- this version of wine seems a bit more stable again with PP
SE .... I wouldn't call it perfect however....
I had a bit of a longer play with it -- fonts are being rendered, but what doesn't seem
to be working properly are screen updates in the project work area of the PP main window.
That is, the area content is displayed correctly at initial loadtime, but clicking on a
(any..) project element starts to make things 'disappear' - any edits made do work though.
It looks like the buffer contents associated with any text/graphic area/selection are
being ill-managed, and when items do disappear, certain menu operations tend to cause the
main window to refresh and display everything again. So it's bronze medal at best, even
when you do get it running...and problematic to work with...'editing in the dark' as it were...
Having 'emulate a virtual desktop' ON in winecfg is entirely optional as it turns out -
the program instance starts-up in it's own window which you can resize.
From the way PP SE is behaving, and in view of the debug trace output I'm seeing here,
you might end up with 'the best idea' being to submit a support ticket on this issue.
I probably haven't played all my cards yet with this...ie; there's a few windows registry
keys I want to tinker with...I'll get to that directly...
If you do concluded to submit a ticket on this issue, point to this thread for some
background info of what's been found/tried....(helps the devs out ;)
If you're -sure- PP 11 if suffering from exactly the same issue as PP SE, that's handy
from the dev's point of view, as they get ahold of actual copies of the software in
question to examine themselves (without cost ;). What is a bit troublesome, is the
fact you can't recreate the same thing with CO-8.0 and PP SE...I've been isolating the
specific dependencies...
=> Starting with a fresh bottle, win2000 profile.
=> The installer needs visual c++ 6.0 installed into the same bottle to work.
=> Turns out 'Emulate a virtual desktop' must be ON to avoid stalemate with twinview and the installer (known X issue)
After installation however (and after the online registration), you may turn this OFF again.
=> Requires Internet Explorer 6.0 for online registration procedure.
That's the minimum requirements here for PP SE and CO-8.0 to get it running with
the screen redraw issue. I see a lot of the following whenever you click in/change
the work area contents ;
trace:seh:raise_exception code=c0000005 flags=0 addr=0x25001609 ip=0x25001609 tid=0018
trace:seh:raise_exception info[0]=00000000

trace:seh:raise_exception ebp=00000000 esp=0033f28c cs=0023 ds=002b es=002b fs=0063 gs=006b flags=00210202

trace:seh:raise_exception code=c0000005 flags=0 addr=0x25001609 ip=0x25001609 tid=0018
Changing the zoom setting redraws the window contents - it still throws the above trace.
I'll try some other tricks over the weekend...
Cheers!
