Hi,
I could ask whether or not you've done the OpenAL stuff mentioned in the tips&tricks here?
If not, you should try that. Just FWIW kinda thing, a number of games suffer some limitation
if they use OpenAL with the current crossover-games/wine build. Crossover games 8 series is
based on wine-1.1.24 -- better OpenAL supports appeared in wine-1.1.31 iirc -- we can hopefully
look forward to these improvements being considered for a future release of crossover-games.
Otherwise, currently, you have to use some hack to work around the issue..
Hope this helps...
Cheers!
yeah, i saw that but was hesititane to do that b/c it states "Please be aware that these files might contain malware." Is there a nightly build of CG that is based on 1.1.31. i'm also curious as to how soon would we to see a build base 1.1.31 released?
I hear you -- I know a lot of windows virus' and so forth are highly unlikely to run at all
under crossover, because they need a "real" running windows kernel to work (in the same
way that a lot of activex and gameguard/hackshield type programs don't currently run with
crossover/wine, for the same reason...they need a 'real' windows kernel running as well).
That said, 'malware' is a bit of a grey word, and you could never really be sure that using
such a hack, while it may or may not work, might incidentally introduce another issue with
running the game itself that 'should not be there' sort of thing - you end up chasing a 'bug'
or 'problem' that isn't actually there, so if not 'security', then 'software integrity' is
also another consideration when using such methods...(I can say I have tried similar openal
hacks on other titles in linux using crossover/wine and never had any security issues, but
then, the hacks themselves only 'helped' but did not completely 'fix' openal problems...ymmv)
I think the nightly builds are still 'mobile' and syncing in changes every week or two, and
they're probably going to keep doing that up until at least/after the Snow Mallard flies...

I've no idea where the codeweavers devs will conclude to draw as baseline, the wine build
of what will be Zombie Mallard. Hopefully they will get into the spirit of things, and use
a wine branch that closely resembles a brain-eating duck. I'm hoping for a 1.1.30+ branch
as well...oh, and btw, I think I have a ticket in already asking for openal stuffs being
looked at again wrt the wine-devel fixes -- if one of our glorious ninjas doesn't pickup
on this discussion, it wouldn't hurt for you to submit a support ticket (or send an email
to info@codeweavers.com) to let them know Osmos is needing openal hooks as well - what is
really helpful, is if you can check/verify or not, that the recent improvements in wine
devel here, actually work for you -- the more people 'sticking their hand up' to alert
the devs they need openal hooks for their app/game, the more likely the devs get to know
about the need and have a chance to look into it...
Hope this helps...
Cheers!
Hi erifneerg,
I wrote the "Getting Osmos to run" tip. The given link takes you to a forum where anyone could post anything, which is why I added "Please be aware that these files might contain malware.", mainly to keep CodeWeavers free from protesting users. That being said, I conclude with Don that it is very unlikely that those files will wreck your system. I use the OpenAL substitution files myself and haven't found any problems - just make sure you have a current backup around if anything DOES go wrong. ;)
