Nota Bene 10

Anyone out there successfully running Nota Bene 10 beta on Mac 10.8.4? Some of my difficulties--being unable to save a file, for example--may be related to the new user interface--though after using NB for 20+ years, I'm pretty sure I'm doing that right. I'm having difficulty moving and opening files into the NB directory. Any suggestions?

Hi Sarah

I'm pleased to find someone else trying to run Nota Bene 10 on OS X 10.8.4 using CrossOver. Sorry I'm not able as yet to comment on your difficulty. My challenge ins with the installation process

I previously ran Nota Bene 8 on a PC and was pleased to see that NB 10 should be able to run on Wine. I can't even get it to install properly through the CrossOver Setup process. It install most of the way and then I get a string of Error popups saying things like, "C:\nbwin\Codejock.CommandBars.Unicode.v15.31.1.ocx Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code Ox1" My options are Abort, Retry and Ignore> Retry doesn't help and selecting Ignore simply takes me on to the next similar Error popup. It eventually installs "successfully" but ends up being a mere 78 kb in size, in effect being nothing more than the NB labels for both Nota Bene 10 and Debug Nota Bene 10.

My installation NB.LWS.10.0.b11.Setup.exe file seems to be correctly downloaded, being 52.8 MB in size.

Did the installation process work ok for you? Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks
Dave

Nota Bene 10 is currently in Beta testing stage, Beta 12 is available and Beta 13 will soon released. I have been working with their Technical Support group since summer 2012. I was always able to install Nota Bene 10 easily enough, but there were initially some problems with printing and file saving. The printing problems have now been solved, and Nota Bene files print normally. File saving problems will be solved on Beta 13. The one problem I continue to experience is in opening old Nota Bene files in Nota Bene 10. They open as "read-only" files. I have worked with both Crossover and Notabene technical support and this still remains an issue, although one can save the old NB files as .rtf and edit them in this format. Crossover technical support tells me that this last problem is one with Wine, the basis of Crossover, and will eventually be solved.

I install the Beta versions of NB in the Windows XP "bottle" that pops up automatically in Crossover. The most recent version of Crossover allows for Windows 7 and Windows 8 "bottles" but I haven't been able to install NB in one of those.

For some of the problems mentioned here, I advise people to contact NB Technical Support.

The latest version of Nota Bene 10, Beta 14, has solved the file handling and formatting problems that had appeared in the earlier Beta versions. I now find it fully functional when installed in the winxp bottle of Crossover. I am still not able to install it in the win7 or win8 bottles. The Nota Bene technical support people continue to be very helpful, and they now have good experience in helping Wine/Crossover users.

I am on the verge of getting a MAC and am a regular user of Notabene 10. When I do so, should I obtain the trial version of Crossover to test out first? Will the trial version function sufficiently to test out Notabene?

Also do you recommend Crossover over running Windows 7 in a separate partition? I would very much prefer to avoid that if I can count on this.

Thank you!

The trial is not crippled in any way and you can test Crossover for 14 days (used to be just 7 a while back). It may nag you to register from time to time though :)

I am unable to use ibidem on Crossover Nota Bene 10 Beta 15. I receive the following error: "Program Error: 0x6 frmIbidMain.Form_Resize Overflow." (At first, Ibid came up. However, after I tried accessing the help files, it crashed. Then when I tried doing a second notabene install, it still did not work).

I have tried it in debugging mode as well. I am using OS X 10.9.

I will speak with Notabene and Crossover tomorrow. Any ideas out there?

Thanks.

All best,
Larry Kant
