Neverwinter Nights GOG edition not working after Mac Crossover 11.01

My Neverwinter Nights GOG edition bottle stopped working after Mac Crossover 11.01. I was previously using Crossover Games.

The set-up screen appears, but after clicking "Play" only the Neverwinter Nights mouse pointer appears on a black screen. The game music can be heard playing.

Prior to Crossover 11.01, the intro movies could be heard but not seen. Pressing the space bar would skip them until the game screen was reached. Now only a black screen appears.

Running Mac OS X 10.6.8

Is anyone else having this problem?

What I've discovered in my own testing with CX11 (both in 10.6 and 10.7, on a GMA 950 MacBook) is that CX11 seems to not react well to NWN's use of the Bink Video Codec. The movies either lag horribly or cause the game to lock up on a black screen, before it even reaches the menu screen. Curiously, disabling the movies in the game's .ini file doesn't seem to work.

So on a hunch, what I did was this - I went to "/GOG.com/Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition", in the bottle where I installed NWN, and simply changed the "movies" folder to "Nomovies". Changing the name of the movies folder (or just deleting it entirely) effectively prevents the movies from playing, and hence from keeping the game from working. Hope this helps.

After some trial & error, I was able to bring the game back to life. It took two install-from-scratch attempts. On the second try, I used the "select installer file" option instead of the "select installer folder" option. I can't confirm if that was what made it successful.

I also manually added the following lines to the nwn.ini file under [Display Options]:

Disable Intro Movies=1
AllowWindowedMode=1

I should add that I am using a new monitor. I didn't think that would make any difference, but it is a difference in hardware from when I last played the game, so there it is for the record.

Oddly enough adding those two lines to the game's .ini file didn't seem to work for me; only moving/deleting/changing the name of the movies folder finally helped. But still, I'm glad the game works for you!

Same problem here.

Neither adding the lines to the nun.ini nor removing the movies help.

I'm stuck with a black screen, just having the gauntlet mouse pointer of the game.

Any idea what goes wrong?
Is reverting to CX Games 10 the only way?

The only thing I can think of at this point would be to try to delete your whole bottle, start again, and reinstall...first try moving or renaming the movies folder to see if that works.

Just finished reinstalling into a new xp bottle.
Black screen with mouse cursor and background music. Occasional I can hear a click when I manage to hit a invisible button.

Even with the lines added to the nun.ini, I occasionally do get the same issue. What you have to do is switch to windowed mode and full screen and back. Sometimes it takes a few times. Eventually, the GUI does show up and I don't have any more problems.

To switch modes on the fly, press ALT+Enter on the keyboard (Command+Return/Enter works too).

The above suggestion does indeed work, though I believe you need to set up "AllowWindowedMode=1" under [Display Options] in the nwn.ini file. Once you've enabled this, ALT+ENTER to flick back and forth, as the above poster recommended.

I currently DM on a Persistent World server called City of Arabel, and purchasing CrossOver has been perhaps the best decision I've made in a while in regards to this game. I was previously running it through an older edition of Parallels, but I find the graphics mediocre at best and too laggy for the response speed I need as a DM.

Now if only the toolset would work. Then I would be elated. :)
