Neverwinter Nights - Diamond edition - Crossover Games Mac 10.1

I purchased Neverwinter Nights - Diamond from GOG.com and installed it into a Windows XP bottle using Crossover Games for Mac 10.1. Computer is a Mac Pro, 2 x dual-core 2.66 GHz Xeon CPUs, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT GPU, 8 GB RAM, Mac OS 10.6.7.

The installation ran smoothly. I downloaded the files setup_nwn.diamond.exe, setup_nwn_diamond-1.bin and setup_nwn_diamond-2.bin from GOG.com into a single folder and selected setup_nwn.diamond.exe as the installer file for Crossover Games.

The NWN start-up splash screens and animation do not display; the screen is white. The sound can be heard, however, and repeatedly pressing Esc will skip each splash screen until the game menu is reached.

The game plays well, with one frustrating exception; the game screen will occasionally go black or grey during play. This problem has been reported by others in previous versions of Crossover Games. The game interface can still be called using the keyboard when this happens and the game can be paused and saved. Re-loading a saved game returns the screen to normal. I have not been able to determine a trigger for the screen blanking. I have observed it both during play and while the game is left idle, which I purposely did for several minutes until the problem happened. I have not been able to find a video configuration in the game that makes the problem better or worse.

Strangely, I have experienced this exact same problem happens with the Mac version 1.69 of NWN. The Mac version is Power PC code, having never been made Universal Binary for Intel CPU Macs, which may be a cause.

The game will allow access to online multiplayer, but I have not tested this in actual play yet.

UPDATE:

The problem of the game screen occasionally going black or grey does not seem to happen when using the Crossover Games "Emulate a virtual desktop" option.

Just installed it from GoG as well and everything seems to be running fine. I just sent GoG an email request for the multiplayer cd key but to be honest I'm not sure where exactly to enter it when it arrives (which could take days apparently). Most forum posts I have read on other website seem to point to changing the nwncdkey.ini file but I don't know how to access that with a GoG version. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The nwncdkey.ini file is found by using the "Manage Bottles ..." option from the Crossover "Configure" menu. Choose the "Advanced" tab then click the "Open C: Drive in Finder" button. From there, you will be able to browse the Neverwinter Nights installation and find the nwncdkey.ini file.

Hi, I just tried this out on my macbook pro 2.3 ghz 4gig ram with Lion 10.7.4 and NVIDIA Geforce 650M 512MB. I downloaded NWN Diamond from a torrent; I had previously bought the game and had my own cd keys. Had to patch the bottle with NWN 1.69English HotUpdate to get past the need for a cd. When I ran the game with a windows XP bottle the initial screens didn't show up but neither did the menu screen. All I could see was the NWN finger pointer and a black screen. Tried again with a Windows Vista bottle but no luck. Any ideas? Thank you!

These issues might be as a result of the video files not being supported under Crossover. Try these out for me first:

Launch the game - When you get the cursor with the black screen, click the mouse several times. At least 4 or 5 times. This should bypass the on launch videos. See if you get to the main menu.

If that fails, open up the Bottle's C drive, navigate to the movies folder in the NWN install folder (/Program Files/Neverwinter Nights/movies/) and append the file extension .bak to the files in this folder (EG: if file name is intro.bik, rename to intro.bik.bak). NWN does not fail when it can't locate the videos to play, but simply skips them.

If all else fails, try installing DirectX 9 and see if that gets you going.

HTH!
