does steam version work?

Has anyone tried the steam version of nwn2? It includes all the expansions with it as well.

I'm running CXG 8 but would upgrade if necessary.

At first blush...it would appear that it doesn't. It seems to be trying to install Microsoft .NET 4.0 which I don't believe is compatible with Crossover yet.

Still fiddling with it and trying a clean bottle.

Did manage to get NWN2 Steam version working in the end?
It would be much appreciated if anyone could get it working.

Hi,

^bump^

Anyone? I keep populating the distributor comparison table,
but I couldn't determine the situation wrt the Steam release
going by content currently here in the forum. I'm going to
mark the Steam distribution as 'untested' for now until the
position is clear ;)

Cheers!

I haven't gotten it working. I've tried a number of things including preinstalling the .NET 3.x stuff. The installer is looking for and calling forth .NET 4.x which doesn't work correctly last I checked.

I don't know if anyone else might have figured out a different way to convince it to work :).

I can't get it to work, it won't install the .net 4 framework :(

Any Ideas?

Hi,

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=4118

query: why exactly is there no mention of .NET 4.0 actually stopping
the show wrt the above link? Is there some newer release of NWN2 that
isn't covered by WineHQ AppDB?

It just seems a bit curious that there's a gold ranking there against
a recent wine tree (1.3.9) and in theory things should pan out the same
here in Crossover as they do in wine pure (more or less) - it should by
rights run in CXG as well -- by the looks of it, folks are blithely
ignoring the fact that the .NET 4.0 install fails, and still get it to
work...curious...

Cheers!

ps: there may of course be a caveat to that - winehq is very linuxcentric
-- that said, it's not the first time I've seen a disc based version work
around things and the Steam version doesn't (I think due to the fact that
the builtin Steam installer logic will not launch the game until it is
happy .NET 4.0 is in place -- the game itself might function without that
dependency all things told, but Steam is enforcing the issue, not NWN2)...

For me, note I have the retail DVDs, I had to install .NET separately after creating a bottle. Then I could go ahead with the install process. And for me, it was .NET 2.0, not 4.0. Perhaps the Steam version is creating some oddities in the compatibility by requiring the newest .NET which is not compatible.

.NET 4.0 Link on AppDB:

Just a thought.

Thanks for that - there could be a number of reasons why Steam
is trying to pull in .NET 4.0 -- actually discovering the answer
to that is going to be another matter ;)

I'll have to consider the Steam release as having been 'tested'
now, and known not to work -- I've updated the distributor
comparison table to reflect that position ; it may save others
in the future from grabbing a release which won't work until
the .NET 3.x/4.x supports are in crossover/wine, which afaik is
a long way off yet.. ;-/

Kudos to all for helping out here!

Cheers!

Aye, the DVD retail works just fine. I have BOTH the DVD Retail and the Steam version. That's how much I like it :).

The Tips & Tricks I did up awhile back when it was driving me crazy absolutely works with the DVD retail. The Steam version is trying to install and check for .NET 4.0 for some reason and that is causing the failure. It never finishes to install correctly. I've been trying to trick and bypass it whenever I get a chance to fiddle with it but haven't been successful yet.

The proper thing is to do is as Don indicated and is doing, separate the DVD and Steam versions. The DVD works just fine, the Steam version does not.
