NWN 2 GOG Crashes

I've installed NVN2 GOG using Crossover version 21.2 on a 2015 MBP running OSX 12.6. When I run the game it works fine until the first moment when I exit the cabin that the game starts in. The moment I do it goes to a loading screen, and then promptly crashes. I am not sure what is causing the problem, and I am hoping that someone may have dealt with this and resolved it. Just a heads up, I am pretty basic when it comes to the technical aspects of the program, so if you have a solution and you are kind enough to share, keep in mind that I will need detailed instructions if there is a technical solution.

I have not used Crossover in many years as I’m a Linux only user now, but I can tell you what the issue is… you’ll have to search how that fix works with Crossover. With Linux, including Steam Deck, you have to install “d3dx9” using winetricks or protontricks to get past that crash. It should be the same needed for Crossover since it’s basically the same tech. How you do anything like Winetricks to install d3dx9 in your bottle I do not know anymore through, but I am sure it’s possible.

A little searching… you may see if the full d3dx9 package is available using this method… I hope so.

Hi all,

Our CrossTie for Neverwinter Nights 2 should be doing the same thing that installing d3dx9 from winetricks is doing, so sadly there is likely a different issue happening here :/

Best,
Meredith

In Linux, the crash is identical. Everything works fine and it crashes as soon as you leave the starting house. Installing d3dx9 is the only thing that clears it. If that is definitely being installed (not maybe or just one or some of the dlls) and it still crashes, it’s still highly likely it’s a DX9 issue and maybe the actual dlls aren’t getting past some further driver issue. I’m not sure how to check what the Crosstie actually installs, or if the OP used the Crosstie or did a manual install and is missing it.

Thank you for the input I've received from everyone so far. I'm trying to see if installing d3dx9 resolves the issue, but I'm not sure how to install it into my NWN2 wineskin.

Crossover would probably be a better way to go for up to date and performance… if their Crosstie is working for the game. Wineskin would probably work, just not sure how up to date that is. The Wineskin app inside the wrappers has an option for Winetricks and to install d3dx9 in that.

I found where in the Wine Configuration I can add existing overrides, and I can add d3dx9... however, there are multiple d3dx9s. I literally have options ranging from d3dx9_24 through d3dx9_43. There are also some options for d3dx10 and d3dx11.

Would it be pertinent to just try them all one at a time and see if they work, should I just add all of them in, or is it possible that either of those options could bork something up?

It’s a DX9 game, 10, and 11 aren’t needed. The d3dx9 package installs and uses all of the d3dx9 dlls. Is it maybe only 1 or 2 needed? I don’t know, but the game plays fine for me with all them them being used.

Well crud. I tried adding them all in the libraries and it still crashed.

The trick that solved it for me is to install into Win7 64bit bottle instead of WinXP.

There are reports from two testers on this site ( this year) that say the game "runs great". Would be good if the Crossover folks contacted them and asked what settings they used?

I've got a ticket in currently for my M1 iMac running Crossover 23. First of all, it works perfectly with no crashes and I'm into Act 2, but FPS is pretty poor. I installed it using the Crosstie but as suggested but combat is almost unusable.
