Word 2002 Table of Contents

I am attempting to generate two tables of contents and an index in a 200-page document. I have set the TOC to be in the form of hyperlinks, which works fine, and always goes to the right place, but Word keeps getting the page numbers all screwed up. The page nos are fine until somewhere around pg 40 it adds one to the number shown in the TOC. By the end of the document it's 9 pages out. Apart from the fact that Word is so clunky and inexact in the way it handles TOC, and apparently was never intended to handle 2 TOCs, it should still be able to count. Also, on those aoccasions that it got the numbers right, if I regenerate the index, some of the page numbers change! Anyone have a workaround?
