Problem opening digitally signed email

When I try to open an email signed with an S/MIME certificate, Outlook 2010 gives the error "Cannot open this item. Your Digital ID name cannot be found by the underlying security system." I can't find a way to turn off certificate checking either. The message will not display in the reading pane.

Does anyone have a suggestion? I am using Outlook 2010, version 14.0.4760.1000.
