Unable to send or retrieve GMail

I have configured Outlook under Crossover Linux Standard 6.1.0 to download mails from my GMail account. I am unable to send/receive mails from this account.
POP/SMTP works for my other mail accounts which use the standard ports. GMail uses the ports 995 and 465 to receive/send mails. Does this have to do something with the problem.

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. I added a yahoo acct and it worked fine. I tried different port settings for gmail, but it fails to receive or send.

If you don't mind, could you two open support tickets for this problem. We're putting a lot of focus on Outlook for our upcoming version and I know our developers would be interested in hearing about this through official channels. Thanks. 😊

i too having this issue? what gives?

Try installing Internet Explorer 6 into the same bottle as Outlook and see if it helps.

You can also check http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13278 and see if anything there helps get it working.

I've gotten around this using Stunnel to create a local SSL tunnel to Google's servers. After creating a tunnel, Outlook connects to 127.0.0.1:110 (for POP3, IMAP would work as well) without the need for encryption, and the traffic is still encrypted. It works well.

I tried Daniel's solution above and it works for me. The trick is for a linux newbie like me to figure out how to use stunnel and configure properly. Here is what I patched together after googling a few sites. Note I am a complete linux newbie and am only good at patching together work-arounds based on other people's helpful posts.

First off, I'm using Ubuntu intrepid and installed outlook/office 2003 using crossover linux pro 7.1. I've also installed IE 6 in the same wrapper as suggested above.

  1. Setup your Gmail Imap account in Outlook 2003 following instructions from this link: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77661
  2. However, in step 6, for "Server Information", enter 127.0.0.1 for both IMAP and SMTP.
  3. Also for steps 9 and 10, More Settings - Advanced tab, do not check "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" for either IMAP or SMTP. In other words, use the default ports of 143 and 25, respectively.
  4. Get stunnel: sudo apt-get install stunnel4 (or use synaptic package manager)
  5. Go to the installed folder: $ cd /etc/stunnel
  6. create ssl certificate using: $ openssl req -new -x509 -days 3650 -nodes -out stunnel.pem -keyout stunnel.pem
  7. enter requested info which will create a stunnel.pem file in the directory.
  8. Change permissions (not sure if needed, but read this somewhere): $ sudo chmod 600 /etc/stunnel/stunnel.pem
  9. Edit config file: $ sudo gedit /etc/stunnel/stunnel.conf
  10. Make sure to edit (uncomment) the following lines:

cert = /etc/stunnel/stunnel.pem
debug = 7
output = /stunnel.log
client = yes
[pop3s]
accept = 127.0.0.1:110
connect = pop.gmail.com:995
[imaps]
accept = 127.0.0.1:143
connect = imap.gmail.com:993
[ssmtp]
accept = 127.0.0.1:25
connect = smtp.gmail.com:465

11. Run stunnel: $ sudo stunnel4
12. If you send/receive with your new imap account in outlook 2003, it should work fine (no error messages about unable to connect to servers). If problems, you can test by: $ telnet 127.0.0.1 25 and $ telnet 127.0.0.1 143. Telnet should be able to connect to gmail through stunnel.

Hi all,

I'm also having trouble getting Gmail to work with Outlook 2003 (no service packs installed), I'm running Ubuntu 8.10.
I have installed IE6 and configured stunnel as suggested above. Now when I click "Test Account Settings..." I see that Outlook is able to find the outgoing SMTP mail server and the incoming POP3 mail server (so far so good :) ). But then a window comes up asking me to type my username and password, the heading of the window is "Enter Network Password". I type in my gmail username and password and press OK but the window keeps popping up, over and over again.

Here are the results of telnet:

mark@mark-work:/var/log/stunnel4$ telnet 127.0.0.1 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

mark@mark-work:/var/log/stunnel4$ telnet 127.0.0.1 143
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
Escape character is '^]'.

  • OK Gimap ready for requests from (my ip here) b14if923523ana.15

  • BAD invalid tag b14if923523ana.15

  • BAD invalid tag b14if923523ana.15

The connection keeps outputting BAD invalid tag messages when I type into the console.

Anyone know what could be causing this problem?

Thanks,
Mark

Update:

I installed Outlook 2003 SP3, and I unchecked the "remember password" checkbox. Gmail now works perfectly =) And man is it ever nice.
