Office 2010 Font rendering

Hi there

Font rendering in Office 2010 is very blurry, to the point that anything but light editing in Office 2010 causes eye strain. Please see screengrab attached - you'll notice the blurry edges.

Can anyone help please? I get the feeling I'm missing something obvious! My research notes so far are below.

From my research Im pretty sure that this problem is solved for WINE users using winetricks (I haven't tried this myself), but I'm looking for a solution that I can use with Crossover XI out of the box. So far the only modifications I have made are to edit the Registry of my Office 2010 Bottle to include

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"FontSmoothing"="2"
"FontSmoothingType"=dword:00000002
"FontSmoothingGamma"=dword:00000578
"FontSmoothingOrientation"=dword:00000001

and to check that DPI is set to 96dpi.

Research sources as follows:

Also, Ask Ubuntu - How do I enable font anti-aliasing in Wine?

By the way, is you graphics card Nvidia?

Hi, will there be any improvements regarding the font rendering in upcoming Crossover releases? To me these blurry fonts are a no-go to using MS Outlook via Crossover on a regular basis.

And yes, I use a NVidia graphics card (on Ubuntu 12.10).

Quick workaround: remove fonts from Windows bottle (and Microsoft TTF fonts if you have it installed on Linux). Native Linux fonts are not blurry (you may run into Unocide issues, though, because not every font contains full UTF8 charset)

The fonts indeed are not blurry anymore then, that's right, but now they are totally aliased, at least in the message pane. So it looks different now, but still trashy...

Will there be any "real" fix for this issue in the future?

Try playing with antialiasing parameters on xorg side and on wine side. It seems to work acceptable for me. If you fail to find proper combination, I can share what worked best for me.

Thanks for this, removing all the fonts in ~/.cxoffice/<Office Bottle>/drive_c/windows/Fonts helped.
I would be interested in seeing your xorg/wine configuration, as well

I have infinality with rgba enabled xorg-side and

"FontSmoothing"="2"
"FontSmoothingGamma"=dword:00000578
"FontSmoothingOrientation"=dword:00000001
"FontSmoothingType"=dword:0000000

wine-side. I have most of the windows fonts installed, only those that looked ugly due to rendering problems are removed, here is what I left intact:

Thanks for sharing this!
For those still having problems with Outlook 2010 font rendering, unchecking "Always use ClearType" also helps.

..and appears that the issue was completely and properly fixed in 12beta.
