Got Steam version working 100% in Cross Over Games

I got the game to run perfectly in Cross Over Games on OSX, but it took some experimenting.

First you have to create a Win2000 bottle, because there were some issues with the .net framework installing that didn't work under an XP one.

After I created the Win2000 bottle I installed Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable, Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable, Visual C++ 6.0 Redistributable, and DirectX (Modern), all from the supported installations dialog within Cross Over. I installed things in the above order but I don't know if all of it is necessary (or has to be done in that order), that's just what got it working for me.

After that I installed Steam through Cross Over, downloaded Majesty 2 through Steam, and launched it. It launched correctly without any issues and I played it for several hours. The only bug I came across was that I couldn't type periods into the GameSpy login dialog, so internet matchmaking didn't work since I couldn't type the .com into my email address for my account login. Other than that everything worked perfectly.

I tried the above steps with the Direct2Drive digital version as well but this failed because it was unable to authenticate the DRM for some strange reason. That failure happened whether on an XP bottle or Win2000 one. But the Steam one was perfectly playable and got great FPS on my 13'' Unibody MacBook Pro.

Hi,

Just for the record, direct2drive titles often require IE 6/7 installed
into the same bottle for the online registration/activation to work. If that
also fails, (and depending on which DRM is used on the title), requesting a
manual unlock code from direct2drive support has always worked here when the
online system fails..

Cheers!

The unlock used in Majesty 2 is unlike anything I've seen in other Direct2Drive titles; I got Supreme Commander and its expansion from D2D and was able to unlock them fine, and I'm used to that same system in other games like Overlord and Neverwinter Nights 2. The one in Majesty 2 was something else entirely, so I'm not sure if that was why that version failed to unlock. It asked for a specific serial # and my email address, there was no place to input a manual activation code.

Sounds like it by your description...glad I slipped in my 'depending on which DRM is used' bit ;)

I take it the DRM you've got there isn't on of those? Did you email
direct2drive support on this?..I once had trouble with the Ubisoft
based frontend which they replied to with 'sorry, we've adjusted your
account our end - please try again and let us know if it still doesn't
work'...but it did - I'm just exampling that sometimes it's not our
end at fault, it's the other end ;)...

Cheers!

I'm running ubuntu 9.04 64 bit, the newest cross over games, installed steam, installed majesty 2, and it "just worked". I played quite a bit and finished it without problems. I did have an audio stutter problem, but patches posted here for pulseaudio fixed it. I tried it full screen and in a window and preferred the fullscreen.

I didn't try any unlocking or patching of the game.

BTW, I did have to install some of the visual studio pieces (through cross over) so that majesty2 didn't die with a missing library.

Joshua's method worked for me. No idea what will happen in two weeks however when Win2000 stops being supported by Steam!!

The Steam version works 100% using Crossover 11 on Lion. I haven't tried multiplayer though. The game was even smart enough to make room for the menu bar. The only downside was that my dock and expose hot corners were still active.
