LOTRO not launching full game after upgrade

I just saw the popup to update CodeWeavers and did so. Afterward, my Lord of the Rings Online bottle runs the launcher as expected but does not run the full game after login/server selection.

I configured this bottle quite a while ago, and it's been solid. It's Windows 10 64 bit, running the 64 bit LOTRO client. I've been using Direct X 11, and it's been very smooth.

Is there anyone here with some advice?

Oh, this is a 2019 16" Macbook Pro with 2.3Ghz Intel 8-core i9, running Catalina, 32GB memory if that's relevant.

This space blank because I can't find a delete option.

Hi, Susan! I am not 100% sure you ran into the same issue I noted with Crossover 22 and LOTRO, but I suggest you read this thread I created on the LOTRO forums and follow the procedure I outline in Message #2 of that thread:
https://forums.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?695891-Crossover-22-0-has-been-released-Should-you-upgrade-to-it
Even if your issue has a different cause, it is likely that procedure, which involves creating a new bottle without having to redownload or reinstall the game, will do the trick for you as well. There seems to be an incompatibility between bottles created in pre-v22 versions of Crossover and some applications running in Crossover 22.

Be sure your bottle's "Advanced Settings" are set so that DXVK and CSMT are enabled while ESync and High Resolution Mode are disabled. One of those settings might have been changed during the upgrade from Crossover 21 to 22.

And yes, it always helps to know the details of your hardware, OS, and Crossover version!

Brilliant. Now I feel bad for not reading the Mac Technical Support subforum over there anymore.

I'll work through that and hope that's it. Thank you!

I really know better than to install an upgrade of anything the first time I'm notified. Not sure what I was thinking :-/. Though I've upgraded 2-3 times with no negative effect, so I guess I was lulled into complacency.

Wow. Your instructions taught me a nice bit about how Crossover bottles work, but it didn't change anything. The launcher runs. It asks for permission to access the Documents folder. I grant it. It sits around installing the 2010 C++ redistributable. Then I get to the login prompt, select a server, click Play. The launcher closes and nothing happens.

I'm unclear as to why this would have happened now, after several successful upgrades of CrossOver with no changes to this bottle.

Unless you have any additional insight, I'll do a full reinstall and hope.

Your posts on the forum are a huge resource to those of us in the weird Mac corner. Thank you so much.

When you created your new bottle, did you install DirectX for Modern Games into it?

If you're not set to launch the client in Full Screen Windowed mode, try that. It works around a lot of problems. For example, the game might be trying to ask you to grant permission to use your microphone but if you're in Full Screen Mode you won't be able to see that dialogue. So it will look like the LOTRO client just doesn't launch after you click PLAY in the LOTRO Launcher application. Full Screen Windowed mode also solves problems that the LOTRO client has with UHD/"retina" resolutions.

First, be sure neither the LOTRO Launcher application nor the LOTRO client are running.

Then open your UserPreferences.ini file with TextEdit. You'll find it in here:
~/Documents/The Lord of the Rings Online

Look for this line:
ScreenMode=FullScreenWindowed

Then save the file, quit out of TextEdit, and try to run the game again. Report back with as much detail as you can. If this doesn't help, there are other things we can try.

Wow, OK, this is dispiriting. I did a full install, and the behavior didn't change. The launcher runs normally and then the game doesn't launch. I'm not sure what additional detail I can provide, but I'm happy to answer detailed questions.

Is there some kind of permission it might be denied? I don't see anything in Security and Privacy. I even rebooted the computer just in case.

Sadly, I already run my game in FullScreenWindowed. I checked the ini, and that's how it's set.

If there's nothing else that works, is it possible to roll back to the previous version of CrossOver? Is there a log someplace I can look at?

There are still other things to try. But yes, it is easy to roll back to an earlier version of Crossover.

See the three icons near the very top right of this page? The middle one is the international symbol for "person". Click on that and choose DOWNLOADS. When you get to the Downloads page, choose ARCHIVED DOWNLOADS. You can then download Crossover 21.2.0.

I think that's a good idea: Install Crossover 21.2.0 and check if the game will run for you under that version. If so, you can play and enjoy LOTRO. Then, when and if you want to, we can work on getting the game to run for you in v22. I will receive an email if you reply further to this thread or if you start one in the LOTRO forums when you're ready to do so.
