Turbine (Pando) download now works - instructions

With the release of CrossOver Games 10.1, on 16 March 2010, the Turbine downloader
http://www.lotro.com/support/download-lotro
(Standard resolution or High resolution)
FINALLY works!!!

Use the CrossTie installer to directly install all of the components of LOTRO.

This downloader uses the Pando Media Booster technology.

The High Resolution download is still 10Gig, and takes on the order of 6-9 hours for the down load.
The Downloader on my 6Gb/s DSL line runs at approximately 5KBps, and started off telling me that the download would take approximately 9 hours! That time has since "refined" itself to roughly 6 hours.

This means that the necessity of first downloading the complete game from one of the various sites mentioned in Tips & Tricks is no longer necessary PRIOR to using the CrossTie installer.

It is still necessary to allow the installer to download the complete game client before it can be run.

The Turbine installer will launch after the download completes. Allow it to complete.

The Turbine Client launcher will launch. This will fail and (should) pop-up an error window.
Cancel that window.
In the CXG installation window, the "Downloading Lord of the Rings Online" should be the only item running. All of the
other entries should show "finished." to the right of the barber-pole and the word "running" is an "X" -- click on
that to abort the Turbine Launcher and to allow the CXG installer to highlight the "Done" button.

Click the "Done" button.
When the window closes, quit CXG.
Re-launch CXG from the applications directory /Applications/CrossOver Games.app"
in the "Programs" pulldown, select PyLotRO.

Once PyLotRO launches, use the "tools" pulldown, "Settings Wizard"
Select "Lord of the Rings Online", click Find Games.
Select the "C:\Program Files\Turbine\The Lord of the Rings Online" entry; click apply.
In the "tools" pulldown, select "patch"; click start.
You should see something like:
Connecting to patch.lotro.com:80

Checking files...
...... at which point, depending on the size of the patch, go get some coffee.

When "patch" displays: " Finished " ; click exit.
Select your server, enter your Account and password and click login....

and Away You GO...

I've also been able to get the lotro launcher to successfully launch the game (without pylotro). The launcher's graphics are a little messed up and it can be a little tricky to find the buttons, but if you just use the enter key it works fine. I did this on an upgraded pre-10.1 bottle which was missing a few of the 10.1 CrossTie components. I had to install those to get it to work (just take a look at the install script and match it to what you have as far as the MS sdks and runtimes).

The first time I did this the game launched in a "minimized" mode, with an icon on my black screen in the lower left corner. Right click it & "restore" to fix that, but the sound may be disabled. Restarting the game once more makes everything work as normal and I have not had a problem since.

Note 1: when you quit the game the native launcher will ask if it can remain in your task bar to monitor for updates and such. It seemed best to say no to that.

Note 2: running the native launcher will automatically address patches and download any updated loading screens.

I have tried doing this, and it seems the installation just sits there.

I am seeing this: Screenshot

It originally appeared with an Accept button which I clicked, but now it is just sitting there. Is this right, or am I doing something wrong? (OS X 10.5.8)

That screenshot is of a "bad" version of CXG... i.e. pre 10.1

The Pando Media Booster window should show up with correct graphics (i.e. not inverted and not reversed.)

I wonder also it if that situation is related to your OS version. CXG (WINE) and the PMB are only known to work under Snow Leopard (10.6.4, I think) and later. There are some pretty significant differences between Leopard (10.5) and Snow Leopard (10.6).

"Sitting there" is what the PMB did prior to CXG 10.1 ... it is failing to communicate via .net, which did not work correctly prior to 10.1

Is this under LINUX? (I'm assuming from your avatar.)

Under OSX, the launcher simply crashes almost immediately with a list of error messages too long to display, so I can't seen the bottom of the list, where I assume the real error resides.

Thanks, William - I am currently running 10.0.1, so I will upgrade. CSX runs fine for me, as I've been playing Guild Wars with it :)

hi there,

thanks for making that work but since i critizised the way of the explanation and my boyfriend told me i should not do that without making a proposal for a better explanation I give it a try....

When you got CXG 10.1 installed you can now use the Pando installer for Lotro taking the following steps:

  1. go here: http://www.lotro.com/support/download-lotro and download the installer from turbine directly (standard or highres as you like both are working)

  2. open cxg and go to the "manage bottles" screen

  3. either select the bottle you want to use for Lotro or create a new Xp one (is vista possible? i never tried)

  4. go to the application flag and click on "install software"

  5. select lord of the rings online in the list (use the searchbar)

  6. change the installation file to the downloaded .exe-file from the link above

  7. click install

normally now everything but lotro should be installed quickly and after that the lotro installer should start and download the game files and then install those. But I experienced, that the start of the installer failed cause of not installing the other packages first for this occassion just start again with step 4 after everything but lotro is installed....

  1. click on the x beside the barber pole when the installer finished (you can uncheck launch or leave it that way does not make a difference) and finish the installation

  2. go to >programs>(hmm is it execute command? everything is in german here)execute command and search for the pylotro.exe file that one is located in Program Files/PyLotro before executing just click the "save command in Menu" button to save it in the menu bar...

Next steps work just like before use the settings wizard in pylotro select your game directory... and have fun playing

I hope nobody feels bad about me making this step by step guide but i had real problems with the explanation in the first post blush so if somebody takes offense im sorry i just wanted to make it easier to understand

and plz plz plz if i put in a wrong term for a menu or button or something i only got the german version i dont know every term in the english version since i upgraded to 10.1

bye bye Miri

Hi,

I can't get the pando installer to work - i have the backwards image as well and it just hangs saying "Executing pre installation actions".

I downloaded the high-res .exe file version of the pando installer from here: http://www.lotro.com/support/download-lotro

I am using a Macbook Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6.7, Crossover Games Version 10.0.1

What can I do to get this installed and working? I tried all the other forum suggestions (using PyLotro 0.1.15a and doing the temp file move stuff etc. but that didn't work - hence trying via pando as others have got this to work...

HELP :/

Update the CXG to 10.1 and you should be able to use the pando installer.

duh! Thanks Alan, will try using 10.1.

I have been able to follow all the amazing instructions and I thank you all so much for all the hard work.
They worked perfectly for me up until the point where I launched it. The official reload screen came up when you first launch it then it went black and said this:

image

"Connection Failed:
You don't have the current version of the client installed"

I have crossover games 10.1.2?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :) :)

Nevermind I didn't do the patch.

Thanks for making this possible!!!! :) :)

Hi again.

I'm having some trouble again. I haven't played in a while and I went to play again and updated/downloaded all the patch etc. Then I entered my login information and it initially launched. Shows the very first screen of LOTR then goes black and stays black even though I can still use the LOTR mouse pointer. Then nothing happens?

Any ideas is to what has changed and how to maybe fix it?

Thanks :)

Hey guys,
Things are working when I try to install LOTRO but right after the PMB launches and tells me I have about 6 hours of installation a "file compatibility" message occurs. The PMB hasn't started installing anything by this point.
I get this: "The files already exist in the folder you specified: LOTRO High Res Install Files EN\LOTROSetup-1.bin downloading
Would you like to delete these files and start downloading again?"

I have tried deleting the files and downloading again but it just lowers the Kb/s and tells me I have to wait longer. Then it just appears again. Every time the same message comes up.

Any help would be great!
Thanks a lot!

1- What is your environment ?
OS and level
CXG version
Network speed/geographic location
2- Are you using the CrossTIe installer or "rolling your own."
3- PMB will never install anything. It is a "torrent" type downloader. All that it does is downloads the Turbine Installer...
which does take about 6+ hours to download the 10+GB file.
4- Once the file download is complete, THEN the Turbine Installer will begin to run and begin installing the game - a process which will take an additional 6-10 hours.
Note: I haven't doen a download/install from scratch since the ROI release, so the times might be LONGER since that update to the game.
5- can you provide the full text of the "File Compatibility" message. I am unfamiliar with it.

Hey William thanks for the quick reply.

I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and my CrossOver Software Installer version is 10.3.0. I am not sure what you mean by network speed but my internet connection downloads at 15.5 Mbps and I am in Montreal, Canada.
I am using the CrossTIe. The message says exactly that actually. I recently tried it again and it changed slightly to this: https://skitch.com/ewelsford/g61i5/file-conflict.

It seems really easy to fix; just to delete the filed that already exist but for some reason when I click "Yes" about 2 minutes later it just comes up again, identical.

Thanks for your help!

Clearly I am also just the coolest with my Hobbit desktop background..... 😅

They're taking the Hobbits to Isengard ! :)

I happen to have the Valley of Nan Curinur from the Rez circle at twilight -- as my desktop

(Check out the u-tube video by that name if you haven't see it -- hilarious -- as good as Gandalf goes to the world cup)

Hmmm.. never saw that message before. It kind-of-implies- that Pando is aborting and restarting. My first thought was you were getting communication errors causing that to happen, but I'm now wondering if wherever Pando is getting its seed from has one or more corrupted files and it is failing part way through and then trying to recover.

I note from your screen shot, however, that it has downloaded 0B implying that it is happening early on. That might be consistent then with your reporting a "longer" download time - because Pando is changing seeds from one (or more) with fast access to one (or more) with slower access. If that is the case, there is probably little you can do about it.

Two suggestions to try -- 1) quit out of everything -- including CXG! Manually erase the files indicated; re-launch CXG and fire-up the CrossTie installer again and see if it still fails. (i.e. let Crosstie do the resume)

2- if that doesn't work, visit http://www.pandonetworks.com/pando-media-booster and their support FAQ
http://www.pandonetworks.com/pando-media-booster-support-faq

That page has a link to "contact us if you are still having problems."
I don't know if the Turbine PMB client has any of the controls available to it or not, but that is how to find out.

There is always the outside chance that I'm correct in that it is a corrupt file on a seed site, and that seed site will go-away on its own, solving the problem. PMB is a torrent type downloader, remember.

Good luck. I'm afraid that this problem is beyond the realm of CXG and even Mordor.:)

This is very strange. It doesn't make any sense. I tried to delete everything LOTRO related on my Mac, but there wasn't much. I even deleted all the Microsoft and C++ stuff the crosstie downloads and then finally uninstalled Crossover and re-installed it. When I started the LOTRO download again the crossover installer showed that I had downloaded it before. But what's weird is the same message came up but when I searched for the files it said already existed they were nowhere to be found.

I remember once before having found them and deleted them. Then the message came up again stating that certain files already existed but there were no files! It said "The following files already exist in the folder you specified." What's weird is that there were no files listed. It literally said that then the "Yes" or "No" option. There were no files that "existed already."

I don't know why this is happening. I am following the steps verbatim.
Anyways thanks for your help! I might have to go the Bootcamp route.

Are you deleting the bottle(s) involved? The Bottle containing LOTRO should be about 10GB in size!!! (Assuming it has LOTRO installed.)

The folder you want is "Library/Application Support/CrossOver Games"
All of the CrossOver "stuff"is contained in this directory -- the "Bottles" directory is where the bottle(s) exists which contains LOTRO.

Under Lion, it is "hidden" -- unless you have turned on "Library" access. Apple chose to HIDE /library and <user>/library in the finder! (But since you are running Snow Leopard, that doesn't apply.)

However, The "C:\users\crossover\My Documents\" folder in the screen shot should be linked to "<user>/Documents"
And the "The lord of the Rings Online" folder is within that. (And the "LOTRO High Res Install Files EN" within that.

Hmmm.... just had another thought -- You do have more than about 30GB of Free space on your disk drive, I assume!!!

The download is roughly 10GB itself -- before it is expanded during the Install.

Hello.
Just tried Lotro with normal Turbine launcher after migrating to CX 11 and while it runs fine and fast for the program patching it just hangs and do nothing at the next step (Examine data files).

So I reverted to using Pylotro for patching, which it does just right with no fuss and no ads :)
I recommend to keep Pylotro at hand anyway, even if turbine launcher works, just in case and update breaks something and you are unable to patch or run the game with launcher.

Issue with Pando. I tried the newer (11) version of Crossfire, but I am only licensed for 10.3, so I deleted and came back to 10.3.

As I try to reinstall, I'm using the crosstie and everything goes very weill until Pando pops a window and says my OS will not work for Pando. I'm using OSX 10.6. Any of you wise sages have any advice? It's been a couple of week and I'm hankering to finish Update 6 =)

I am using the trial version of crossover, to see if it will work. So far I am glad that I did not purchase it. I have invested the better part of 1.5 days to try to down load Lord of the Rings Online.

I have gone through the entire installation process two times, using cross tie. Each time when I reach about 96% (approx) complete, i get a message that the downloader/installer encountered an unexpected error, and to try again. "sorry for the inconvenience."
However, I then attempted to follow your directions anyway, given that I did have a pylotro file in the Crossover files. Pylotro will open, and shows the predicted error message. When I try to follow your directions, using the "tools" pulldown, settings wizard, select "Lord of the Rings online" ... click Find games.
At this point NOTHING happens. ... I can find files in my library using finder, but I do not find a file c:\program files\turbine\the lord of the rings online. I find lord of the rings online, but no turbine file.
So I am just plain stuck.

I am using a new Macbook Air 13" machine. It should work ...
What could I be doing wrong?

It is pretty clear that what you have is an "incomplete" installation :)

You should be able to simply re-run the CrossTie installer to complete the installation.

Important: Make certain that when you re-start CrossTie, you select THE SAME BOTTLE you used on the previous attempt.
When the CrossOver Software Installer begins:
Click the triangle to the left of the third line: Will install into new winxp bottle
Select the bottle where you previously installed LOTRO.
(If you do not, the CrossTie Installer will create a new bottle and start the entire installation over again from the beginning.

So far, you only have a partial download of the modules via the PMB.
Once they download, the Turbine Installer should kick in and you'll spend another hour or two while that actually installs the game from the PMB compressed files.

THEN you should be able to configure PyLotRO and patch -- which right now is about an hour and will probably be longer on Monday after Update 7 is released.

BTW, PyLotRO is installed early in the process, that is why it is visible in the bottle.

Ok I couldn't get the game to install... anyone know what might be wrong? I got the game to about 69% downloaded, all the prereqs like pando and what not downloaded fine and the game was downloading fine as well but the it encountered a "fatal error"... anyone know what might be the cause? It seemed to be going quite well... took me 4 hours to get there then it flakes out which can really piss one off

I'm trying out one of their demos now. It doesn't seem like it will be realistic for playing an online multiplayer game. I was on about 1 minute before I saw "You connection's bandwidth just dropped. Please wait, recalibrating" with a 30 sec countdown and then dropped the game.

To begin with, 10.5.8 is not supported by the current version of Crossover (11.2).

The current version of Crossover (11.2) is the only version which supports PMB (Pando Media Booster) -- which is the image posted with reversed text.

LOTRO via Crossover 11.2 running on Mountain Lion works very well.

The message about " "Your connection's bandwidth just dropped." has nothing to do with the game OR Crossover, but has to do with your Internet connection. That is to say, your ISP.

The time between "accept" (from the PMB window) and the completion of the Download is roughly 6.5 hours on a 6meg DSL line! The game files are a roughly 14 GB download.

Any updates on this? Just finally got Linux re-installed on my system and I'm going to get everything I can running under it so I don't have to use Windows as much, or at all.

Updates on what? LOTRO runs fine on 12.2 on Mac. If Crosover runs on your version of Linux, it should run with no problems.
