Lord of the Rings going Free 2 Play

Those of us that are playing Lord of the Rings probably got the an email, stating that it is going "Free to Play". What this may mean to the way the game is played via Crossover Games is not known.

My problem is, I can currently play it with the current XGs, but not Turbine's other game D&D online, which I wish I could play without going to BootCamp.

Mostly I am curious on how the patching and additional content loading will work in the future as in the future players would buy expansions in LotRO Store and then how does this translate into what gets downloaded into your client directories. Though there was already someone asking about still getting physical media versions of expansions and Satine took it upon herself to ask this further.

The DDO free to play client works fine in current CXG linux, so hopefully the LOTRO f2p client will also.

You Linux guys have all the luck 😉 , while I have a Mac, CXG doesn't allow me to play D&D online.... But I was thinking, on trying to reinstall it in the Lotrs bottle, if that is kosher.... any ideas????

IMO that would be best, especially if you already have LOTRO working. Just remember to still use PyLOTRO to launch DDO. It works for both, just set the game and patch before entering.

DDO & LotRO will work fine in the same bottle as they are, in a sense, the same engine (LotRO is DDO's engine plus a bit). Going free to play won't change a thing, except the account authentication but PyLotRO currently copes with DDO being F2P so the change needed is minor.

As for problem getting DDO working under CXG Mac, please remember this forum is for LotRO, DDO has it's own forum so it's best to ask for assistance in there rather than here.

Great! DDO f2p is still unavailable in Europe so I had no idea how it works. :)

Actually there is still one reason why I'm not feeling fully at ease yet. If I remember correctly, DDO expansion modules have been such that they belong to everyone who has a subscription. As I said earlier I don't know how DDO f2p works as it's not available in Europe.

LotRO expansions have been purchased either physically or via COG accounts. What I'm curious about is that if there comes an expansion to the game like MoM or SoM. How will they handle content download, will everyone have all the same content data on their installation or will they be downloaded according to what you have enabled in your account after you authenticate in the launcher?

Equipment and certain opponents must be naturally included in base content due to other players equipment and the skirmish system but will all the areas of Middle Earth be downloaded to all installation. :)

It'll work exactly the same way that the Mirkwood expansion worked, it is brought either with cash or via the in-game store (or whatever they are calling it), which will cause a flag to be set on your account indicating that you have that content enabled and the patching process will do the rest because enabled or not enabled the client remains the same for all users. All having a physical CD/DVD does is lets you skip downloading a huge patch, it just pre-loads the data in a location for the patcher to process.

Okay. So everyone has all the same content on their hard drive and it's just a question if you have options enabled on your account.

I live in England, but I still have a US DDO account. My LOTRO account is a US one too, I took advantage of the favourable UK/US exchange rate at the time the game came out and got a lifetime sub :) Looks like I'll get nice bonuses whern it goes free to play. I'm not worried about having 'wasted' money now that it's going to be free. I already got my money's worth from the lifetime sub and I'll get VIP status free without having to spend any more money so it works for me!

Still need to get the SoM expansion though as I haven't played in a while, if it's going to be purchasable by points then I can see a use for the saved up points I will get between now and F2P release.

I need to learn how to play my champion all over again too...

well, I was selected to take part in the beta testing of the LotRs F4P.... I installed it from files that I download from their beta site... onto a PC Laptop, then place them on 3 DVDs. In which I placed them on the hd of the mac pro and installed them just like the instructions from this site.... Pylotro boots it okay.... but.... the patch function doesn't work or does but doesnt patch to the lastest version. When I get to the game it disconnects with that its not the current version.... So... methinks its in the pylotro side...

I installed LotRs and Pylotr both in a new bottle. Did all the setups... but... in the Public server it patches, but not with the Public - Test server. Shrug I think the beta/test server's name is Bullroar, which shows up ok, but no patching from it

1- the NDA indicates you cannot tell anyone you are participating in the Beta -- only on the Beta Forums.

2- Yeah. Turbine has changes something in the patching for Bullroarer. (They have also changed something in release 5 of DDO... sigh.)

The patching sequence completes -- part way. You get through PyLoTRO to the first two screens of the client load at which time, as it is trying to load the Character Screen, you get the message "cannot patch."

If you take the "patchclient.dll" from the working LOTRO bottle and install it in the Bullroarer bottle, you can patch some portion of the client... but the Turbine client load still fails with the same message - "cannot patch."

So, far, I haven't found a fix or work-around...
