an old timer player...after the new f2p update not able to play anymore.

Hello everyone ,
i am so sad today as i can t seem to play. my crossover is up to date i did the patch so when i tried to log in there was initially for 2-3 seconds a black screen and then lotro just quits.
then later on after reading the forums here, i read something about installing directx runtime into the bottle. i got ''directx runtime legacy'' on the menu
so when i press it into LOTRO bottle to be installed i get a pop-up ''crossover software installer'' ....i search the game lord of the rings online siege of mirkwood and i find it in unsupported applications expanding onto community supported applications then i clock proceed...then i choose the installer file ''.exe'' then suddenly during the installation i get a command line option syntax error and when i click to finish the installation it just doesn t work...i try to launch pylotro and on the screen menu of pylotro i get errors etc...
can someone please help me ? even if it s possible somehow live through skype (my username is maiki1978) or through facebook chat ''maiki glab''...please guys give me a hand...

You need to install DirectX Modern (the next one down the list from legacy).

I'm confused, you had LotRO and I assume PyLotRO installed already, you patched LotRO with the new F2P patch then you decide to re-install LotRO.

What do you currently have? Is LotRO installed? Is PyLotRO installed? If PyLotRO is installed what version and what error messages are you getting (without error messages it is hard to work out where the problem might lie)?

Please can you clarify your current position.

I kept having the hash problems they were mentioning yesterday for Europe and I ended up downloading the new installer via wine using the new pando downloader, which wine 1.3.6 at least supports now quite nicely, even though the images on the downloader window were upside down. :) After having reinstalled the game as a new installation, it works nicely for me. The hash problem just wouldn't go away for my earlier install during patching.

Only thing I'd like to get fixed with LotRO is the antialiasing support with wine/crossover. Very sharp and sharp are nice but they flicker annoyingly and the other alternatives are so low quality.

hey alan,
thanx for your quick reply...i am sorry but sometimes the crossover menu is confusing for me ...

i have none of this version of directx u mention....only the legacy one....and yes i played lotro for 2 yrs now using the lotro bottle. never used pylotro before....even though after following the instructions in this forum now it exists as a folder on my mac but when i run it the screen that appears has no possibility to choose a server on which to play lotro and full of error messages ont he pylotro main menu...

The pando installer should work with Crossover Games 9.2 (install the Visual c++ 2008 run-times first), it is a bit uglier than using the Wine 1.3.6 one as you don't get the image, just a horrible grey text on white background.

What is this hash problem? I just updated my EU LotRO to F2P and it went smoothly, so advising people to redownload a fresh install is a bit of overkill.

What version of Crossover Games do you have?
If you haven't been using PyLotRO how did you patch/run the game?

maiki1978 wrote:

Like I said if you don't tell me what the error messages are I can't offer any help.
If it is a complete new install of PyLotRO I'm guessing one of those error messages is about not being able to find the language files, this is covered in the tips & tricks tab.

my crossover version is 9.2.

and i patched it through lord of the rings online launcher of mac osx i never used pylotro before....i tried to make a screen photo but can t post it here...

the pylotro menu says...

initialising please wait....

(eo1) error loading settings
(e13) gae directory not found
(e02)no language files found

i am saying again that i never used pylotro before but the lotro launcher...i installed the game 2 years ago using the instructions here

http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/LOTRO_under_Linux_and_Mac_OS/X

and ever since i patched the game (even mirkwood) and worked fine without any problems....i am so sad as it s so difficult for me to do it on my own...☹️((

They appear to have removed those hash error news postings that they had yesterday right after the servers were coming back online. Here's some posting from forums regarding hash error fix.

I kept getting some E_HASH or something like that problem when running patching and when I tried running the client I had a complaint that some file could not be accessed. So, a fresh install made more sense in my case than trying to figure out what had broken. :)

Ah, found more info on the subject here and on LotRO EU twitter mentioned restarting the launcher to correct the issue but pylotro of course should just need rerunning patching but that didn't help.

i think i ll erase everything and reinstall the game with pylotro i m gonna follow the instructions here and hope to get through...first thing tomorrow though...need to go to the gym now..

Keep in mind that my case was caused somehow by patching at the time that lotro eu servers were having bad content and the windows launcher managed to fix this for windows users but patching via pylotro seemed unable to get a functioning client together for myself. I just wanted to point out that if someone yesterday was patching and ended up with problems, the fix that worked "fastest" for myself was redownloading the full installer and installing -> patching the client via pylotro -> starting the game. Downloading the ~10GB installer took about 5 hours. :)

i know i got a very fast connection though and i ll use my dvd to download with pylotro ...it says so on these instructions here...

http://www.mcgillsociety.org/PyLotRO/index.html

oh yeah...and it s about time they made a mac version for this game...i am getting tired each time getting stressed when an update comes out..

Wouldn't mind a Linux native either. ;)

or a friggin launcher/patcher that works under WINE. ;)

You do not have to erase anything, you already have PyLotRO installed. If you'd read what I posted you would now have PyLotRO configured. The error messages you posted are what you see when PyLotRO isn't configured (ie it's default state). In the FAQ on tips & tricks it tells you how to configure PyLotRO, it even mentions one of the error messages specifically (language files not found).

Please read the information that has been given and is available, it will save you a lot of work and time.

Should of realised Codemasters wouldn't be able to handle a major update without making a mess of things, silly me :)

Not being a twit or tweeter or whatever people who use twitter are called I couldn't read that. Not much I can do about it not working after hitting the error as all PyLotRO does is fire off the games own patcher function, looks like maybe the proper launcher might do a tweak here or there to get around the problem

Yeah, they seem to have had issues with every single major release, I guess I should have rather waited a couple of days before updating but I was eager to see the new game even though I played in the beta already with another wine bottle. :)

Thought as much and thus I took the solution that I did. Fixing windows software is always the same, quickest solution is usually to reinstall once something gets broken. Including Windows itself...

hello again...

i am still up and awake...in those instructions the phase 2 is impossible to understand..i will copy paste them here and comment and ask my questions with CAPITAL LETTERS...

* 2a- In CXG from the pulldown menus at the top select: Configure/Install Software
* 2b- Scroll down in the resulting box
* 2c- Click on the triangle beside Community Supported Applications scroll down and select PyLotRO

FINE UNTIL NOW....

At the moment, there is only one source for pylotro-setup.exe. That site is frequently at its bandwidth limit. A second site is being added to the script: www.mcgillsociety.org/PyLotRO/pylotro-setup.exe until that update is made, you may have to download the pylotro-setup.exe file manually, and use Other Application to install it. OK WHAT I DID I COPIED/PASTED THE URL LINK AND I DOWNLOADED PYLOTRO-SETUP.EXE (AROUND 13MB) AND I DOUBLED CLICKED IT BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. I HAD TO CLICK IT AS THERE IS NO EXPLANATION WHAT TO DO WITH THIS .EXE FILE. SO I COULDN T PROCEED WITH THE STEPS 2D 2E AND 2F ....PLUS I THINK THE WORD ''will'' ON THE 2D STEP NEEDS TO BE EXCHANGED WITH '' WHEN''

* 2d- Will install into new winxp bottle appears: click on the triangle and select the bottle where you just installed LOTRO (or DDO)
* 2e- Follow the windows wizard instructions -- just take all the defaults; ignore errors at the end.
* 2f- Wait for the CXG installer to finish. ignore any errors at the end.

Hi,

Be considerate of the fact that most people are in bed at the time you indicate.
Also, do not 'shout' by using capital letters...this, won't wake people up, I assure
you. In fact, it usually upsets forum members to do so....let me look at the world
clock for you...hmmm...it looks like the sun will not rise for a number of hours in
those parts of the world where most of the advocates for this title live...my guess is
they're sound asleep in bed too....it'd be another 5~7hours before they wake up...

Cheers!

i used the capital letters so that they would understand my part and also the text from the installation instructions...i said it at the beginning of the message so as to make it clear...

i tried once again the installation....from the beginning...

so now i launched pylotro and doing the initial patch ...
however, no drive_c/windows/system32 can be found inmy directory...and i am looking really everywhere...
can someone tell me which bug fix should i choose if i find those files? the one from the 16th of september or the one from 25th of september?

@maiki1978 – I fully sympathise with your frustrations: don't you just hate it when a much-hyped 'improvement' makes a process you've been using happily for ages fall apart in a sea of error messages and failure modes? With apologies for cross-posting, here's what finally worked for me, re-posted in the hope that it may get you back in the game too.

From mid-August to Monday 01 November 2010, I was happily playing LotRO on my MacBook Pro, using PyLotRO v0.1.12, from the UK.

Since the Free to Play/Enedwaith/Ride of the Grey Company server upgrade on Tue 02 Nov, it's taken three days of trying everything-I-can-think-of/find-documented to get PyLotRO to run LotRO again. To help others stuck in similarly frustrating circumstances, here's the solution that finally worked for me. Although I happen to be using Mac OS X, some or all of these steps may be directly applicable to Linux systems too.

System specs: MacBook Pro, Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.5 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.8

  1. Using Crossover Games v9.1.0 [1], I create a new 'win xp' bottle called 'LOTROEU-F2P-04Nov-CG91'
  2. Into this 'LOTROEU-F2P-04Nov-CG91' bottle I install:
2a. 'Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood' from a downloaded 'lotrosetup.exe' (and associated 'lotrosetup-*.bin' files) from 13 Aug 2010
    2b. 'PyLotRO' from a downloaded 'pylotro-setup-0.1.14.exe' [2] from 02 Nov 2010
2c. 'Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Modern' from 'Runtime Support Components' [3]
  3. I launch PyLotRO v0.1.14, and:
3a. use Tools > Settings Wizard > Find Games > Apply to tell it where the Game Directory is, ie: 'C:\Program Files\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online'
3b. use Tools > Patch > Start to bring all the files in 'C:\Program Files\Codemasters\The Lord of the Rings Online' up to date by downloading from the Codemasters patch server – and after c. 1 hour of downloading and patching (including several clicks on the Start button when errors were reported), all appears to have concluded successfully [4]
3c. login to my Codemasters EU Player Account as normal

Before discovering step 2c above, instead of a normal playing session, the following failure mode occurred after logging in (an error also reported by others): after ever-so-briefly flashing up a big black 'The Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood' window, I saw the 'Output' window with Finished in it – D'OH!

My hope is that this detailed description may help others to get back into their Middle Earth adventuring more easily than the three days of trials-&-tribulations I've endured; and that it may help Alan Jackson, William H. Magill, and other such wonderful folk guide other would-be LotRO players to an easier PyLotRO installation/upgrade process, through the online resources at their disposal.

Share & Enjoy,

dalinian

Hey Tim

i would like sincerely to thank u taking your time and showing me so specifically the details....very kind of you !!and yes i ve spent liek 10 hrs figuring out what to do.... i also believe that it s time to revise the instructions in general how to install lotro using pylotro.

i completed the patch today and i get the famous blinking black screen and i am already informed (with your help ) installing the directx runtime modern...
i read the following thread in order to install it

''For Crossover Games Mac, Preferences->Installer Assistant->Untick Hide service packs and dependencies.

Then select Install Software and it will be in the list. ''

However ! when i go to my crossover games 9.2 and check the menu i find only this choice on the tab

reveal new icons whenever they are created and the box is ticked. when i untick it i find it then on the list...i install it
so now i have the following bottles :

lord of the rings online siege of mirkwood
microsoft directx runtime modern
pylotro
winxp

believe me it is still not working...

just to let u know guys with the patch process i followed this :

The need to use a different patchclient.dll file has been identified as a problem with Turbine's update process. The fix is:

  1. remove (or rename) the file: msvcr71.dll found in : "drive_c/windows/system32" of your bottle.
  2. Download the latest PyLotRO using C4P from: www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=6292
  3. Patch
  4. Run the game

and i didn t do the one trick of the 16th september (patchclient2.dll.... )should i do both?

lotro still doesn t run !

thanx again tim for helping me !

any ideas ?
thanx again Tim !

or is it not working because i got crossover games 9.2 and not 9.1 ? is it a must to have 9.1 ??

Linux version.

Aha... I was afraid of that... bummer... :(

Wonder what the difference is between the two?

TBH, I've only just noticed the Crossover Games v9.2 release; and if I choose Help menu > Check for Updates... in Crossover Games v9.1.0, I'm told "You are currently running the latest version of CrossOver Games." – hmmmmm! Now I have PyLotRO v0.1.14 running the latest LotRO F2P incarnation under Crossover Games v9.1.0, I'm not inclined to 'upgrade' to Crossover Games v9.2 – a direct application of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" principle.

AFAIK, the only relevant line in the 'Change Log For CrossOver Games – 9.2.0 CrossOver Games - October 19, 2010' list [1] is:
• "Improved behavior with built-in msvcr71. Should simplify the installation of several unsupported games, including Lord of the Rings Online."

In general, a later software release should work at least as well the version it replaces; so I wouldn't think the fact that you're using Crossover Games v9.2 rather than v9.1.0 would be the reason for your installation continuing to fail. > (quote:314461)

i install it so now i have the following bottles :

lord of the rings online siege of mirkwood
microsoft directx runtime modern
pylotro
winxp

believe me it is still not working...
Assuming all these are all in the SAME bottle, I'm sorry to say I cannot see what needs to be done to fix your ongoing failure mode. For sure-fire cross-checking purposes, here's what my 'LOTROEU-F2P-04Nov-CG91' bottle looks like in Crossover Games v9.1.0:

image

Although I also tried the (16 September 2010) and (25 September 2010) suggestions on the PyLotRO home page [2], in the end they seemed unnecessary to getting PyLotRO v0.1.14 to run the latest LotRO F2P incarnation under Crossover Games v9.1.0, so they don't appear in the numbered procedure in my post above.

Seems to me that the interactions of the three recent upgrades:
• CrossOver Games – v9.1.0 > v9.2.0 app upgrade (on 19 Oct)
• LotRO – 'Free to Play/Enedwaith/Ride of the Grey Company' client/server upgrade (on 02 Nov)
• PyLotRO – v0.1.12 > v0.1.13 > v0.1.14 patcher/launcher utility upgrade (dates unknown)
...have thrown up a complex moving-target flux of tweaks and kludges in the recent past. Now that the first two are fixed quantities, it's my hope that Alan, William and others more expert than myself can 'finalise' changes to PyLotRO and it's installation-&-patching procedure, so that these recent confusions and failure modes will disappear (or do so at least until the next CrossOver Games/LotRO upgrades are released).

wooow tim u helped me so much with this photo...

ok i think i know now why it doesn t run...
it s because our bottles our identical but in my list microsoft directx runtime modern is on the first list menu together with lotro pylotro and winxp....
so here comes the question.....how do i put directx modern INSIDE the LOTRO bottle ?
geeh i so much hope this is the last one...

mmm i tried the following now...

erased the directx modern from the main menu, then from topdown menu configure/install software, i selected the microsoft directx modern into the lord of the rings online bottle to be put with all others... it started installing showed however some errors i disregarded and continued the installation but the directx modern in the end was not there ☹️((

maiki1978 wrote:

OK, seems like perhaps all you need to do is successfully install 'Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Modern' into your existing LotRO+PyLotRO bottle.

Here's an illustration of this procedure, using Crossover Games v9.1.0 for Mac OS X (hopefully not varied much in v9.2.0).

Here's hoping this is your 'Last Step' too! 😎

Out of curiosity, what requires those Microsoft Visual C++ installations?

I've installed LotRO Free2Play via wine (1.3.6) on Ubuntu Linux 10.10 x86_64 without installing any Visual C++ stuff to the wineprefix and it works great, except for the antialiasing... :) In that installation I'm using Alan Jackson's Ubuntu repository for pylotro. :)

Jukka Palko wrote:

installations?

AFAIR, the 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable' entries appeared in the LotRO bottle alongside 'Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood' as a result of step 2a of my installation procedure:

  1. Into this 'LOTROEU-F2P-04Nov-CG91' bottle I install:
2a. 'Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood' from a downloaded 'lotrosetup.exe' (and associated 'lotrosetup-*.bin' files) from 13 Aug 2010

So from what you mention, I guess they may have been made redundant by the Sep/Oct/Nov upgrades, as has the 'Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Legacy' entry. But as long as my 9.69 GB installable LotRO fileset from 13 Aug 2010 works with suitable patching by PyLotRO, I'm content to have a couple of redundant entries in the LotRO bottle too (the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" principle at work again).

good morning everyone,

thanx tim for your help again...i actually did the same so i followed again the same path as u did...
when i start installing there is a message coming up ''the installer has exited but directx modern does not seem to be installed'' so even if i continue the installation it is not added in there...☹️
i will try to downgrade my crossover games version from 9.2 to 9.1 if it s possible to do so...i ll follow your link...

ok and with the crossover games version 9.1 it does not work either ☹️(((
the directx modern is not installed due to this error message...

Owch! Sorry to hear that 'Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Modern' refuses to install for you. 😕 😥

I'm afraid I'm all out of further suggestions – can anybody else crack why this might be?

my graphics card is this one :

Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x71c5
Revision ID: 0x0000
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.068
Displays:

could it be that my card doesn t support anymore this version of directx ?

That may be a possibility, in that it's not the same as mine:

Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0407
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 3212

But I'm out of my depth here, so let's hope wiser councils prevail on this thorny issue.

Hello Tim

Just a small note, I figured out that you can skip directx runtime modern and only copy d3dx9_36.dll in the lotro directory. This gives me the same effect as installing the whole directx stuff.

Problem seems to be: wine: Call from 0x7b838c02 to unimplemented function d3dx9_36.dll.D3DXGetShaderSamplers, aborting

Now I just need to figure out how to get in game sound back :)

thanx tim again for your help...

so anyone else that can help ?

Hey Alexander,

Thanks for the intel on the 'd3dx9_36.dll' library file – most interesting, and this suggests to me a possible workaround for maiki1978.

"It's a million-to-one shot, but it just might work!" 😉

@maiki1978: I've uploaded a copy of my 'd3dx9_36.dll' library file to an online file sharing facility. So here's what to do to see if Alexander's intel can get you back in the game.

  1. Point your browser at: http://www.4shared.com/file/fvrOxMPF/d3dx9_36.html
  2. Click on the 'Download Now' button, wait the requisite 20 seconds, then click on the 'Download file now' link to download a copy of the 'd3dx9_36.dll' library file to your Mac
  3. In the Finder:
3a. Go to the folder into which 'd3dx9_36.dll' was downloaded (usually ~/Downloads) and copy it to the clipboard – Copy "d3dx9_36.dll"
3b. Go to where it needs to be – for guidance, on my Mac the correct path is as follows:
image (<-- click for legible path screengrab)
    3c. Paste 'd3dx9_36.dll' into your LotRO+PyLotRO bottle's 'system32' folder – Paste Item
  4. Cross your fingers, launch PyLotRO, login to LotRO, and ... tell us if this workaround works for you.

The easiest way to get DirectX Modern into your bottle...

Go to 'Configure' and choose 'Manage Bottles'

Choose the 'Lord of the Rings' bottle

Choose the 'Applications' section

Click 'Install Software...'

Now, CrossOver Games will have pre-selected your LOTRO bottle

Minimize the 'Support Application' section by clicking the triangle

Open the 'Runtime Support Components' section by clicking the triangle

Locate 'Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Modern' and highlight it

Verify that the 'Will install From' section displays the 'Download' option for MSDirectX Modern

Verify the 'Will install into the bottle.....' section displays the LOTRO bottle

Click 'Install'

Now, DirectX Modern should install into your LOTRO bottle.

Tim

lotro folder is enough, no need to move it to your system32 :)

Tim !

i copied the file u gave me ...the file was already in there so i just said REPLACE...

WOO-HOO! Darn fine news, there, maiki – I'm very pleased indeed to hear you're adventuring in Middle Earth again. 😊 😎

I do appreciate your thanks; and let's not forget our success in getting back in the game is a product of participation, involving Alan, William, Alexander and a whole bunch of people who have posted here and elsewhere, and predicated upon those who are developing the software collaboration between LotRO, Crossover Games, and PyLotRO. The great thing about the mutual aid afforded by forum treads is that other folks with identical, similar, or related issues can discover the solutions we've brought about together, and be inspired by our successes.

As it happens, I've been content mostly soloing on the Snowbourn server up till now, raising Daliwyn the human Champion to L31 before growing dissatisfied with her ranged weapons capabilities and retiring her, in favour of Dalirian the elven Hunter, now at L50. There are some occasions though when a little assistance would come in handy, so I may be in touch in game at some point.

hey all...

indeed it s a great work you are doing helping everyone ! it s really great support.also from alan william and alexander's side. As a feedback to the installation process i would say perhaps remove the bug fix of 16th of september and well if time permits why not make a picture installation process for people who are not that familiar with erasing and adding and doing...
i will be more than glad to help you or anyone else who needs help in snowbourn... pls never hesitate and add me as a friend. if i am not travelling and when i am connected i always have time believe me.

thanx once again all...i can sleep tonight after 2 sleepless nights and tomorrow maikielf melkorien will be participating in the war (even though he is on sauron's side to be honest )... 😋
