Random crashing during play

I was playing successfully for 40minutes or so when suddenly I get brought back to my desktop. There was a black screen minimized and when I clicked it it moved to the top left hand corner of my screen. Suggestions? I have tried setting my memory as it says in the Tips & Tricks and I still get that crash. Could someone give me directions on doing this copying d3dx9_36.dll and d3dx9_42.dll as it says in the Tips?

Hi

If you download the files from the links in the tips, you just need to unzip them and copy them to your main Lotro install folder.

What I would say though is I have this issue all the time and I have the two files copied into the Lotro directory. Sometimes I can play for hours without a crash, sometimes it crashes every ten minutes.

Mike.

How have people been able to fix this?

This happens to me as well, though it seems to be totally random - it could crash when entering a new area, when summoning the horse, or even just being afk for a few minutes and find the client crashed upon return. For most of the time the game runs fine for several hours without any crashes at all, and next day it crashes every five minutes instead. The only thing that seems to increase the stability for me is to lower the graphics, even though I'm running the game on a high-end iMac 27" with i7 CPU and ATI 5850 GPU and should be able to handle the game on Ultra-High.

I'm currently running the game at medium/high with shadows, post-processing effects and most other demanding details switched off. It doesnt look as pretty as its supposed do, but it do feel like the client doesnt crash as often now. On the Macbook its the exact same thing. It may not work for you or anyone else and just be my imagination though, who knows.

Doing the same for me...I'll try turning graphics down...

my thread of woe

Same thing here, since f2p, using crossover games to play is almost not anymore an option. It's very unstable and crashes either in the next 5 minutes or 30 minutes.

just wondering if there is a difference between linux and mac on this ? Once I got the f2p working with the dll (or directx) it has been more stable then pre-f2p, where it would crash once every few hours, this is on linux.

No idea - but I've been trying to play Lotro properly since 10.5.x and on different Macs and nothing seems to have made a difference so it seems its a pretty fundamental issue whatever causes it to crash. I'd love for this to be fixed as other than this it runs fine.

Not sure what you experimented with already, my current bottle is really simple:

cxgames 9.2.0,
Bottle: WinXP
Installed applications:
Crossover HTML engine,
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Distribution, (always listed 2 times, think normal and SP)
PyLotro

inside the Lord of the Rings Folder I have manually added a copy of d3dx9_36.dll (link from tips and tricks)) to avoid adding directX and once cxgames/wine is up to date on that dll I can then remove it.

Registry entries I have are:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\lotroclient.exe\X11 Driver : name: PermissiveMinMax value: Y (this is for correct fullscreen alt tab under KDE4)

I have a symbolic link from .cxgames/Lord of the Rings Online/drive_c/Program Files to my real Lord of the Rings directory so I can easly switch between cxgames, wine or try diffrent bottle setups without having to reinstall or copy the whole thing over.

System is Opensuse 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.14 with KDE 4.3 and Nvidia gfx card with Nvidia's own drivers.

Maybe some of this will help, it really runs rock sollid, sound works (after pulse work around), voice chat works, no crashes (knock on wood).
