Stuck on install

I have attempted to install LOTRO multiple times and I always end at the same place.

It is directly after I "successfully" install LOTRO, uncheck the two boxes about the read me and start program, click the "finish" button and the CrossOver program hangs. I have let it run an additional 7 hours thinking maybe it was downloading files - no luck.

Anyone have this happen before?

I am fairly certain the short is between the mouse and keyboard :).

With this in mind, I have done a clean install and working with CrossTie once more.

Will post results.

I continue to let it run, but so far the same effect - LOTRO installed - now the CO installer continues to run without progress on the bar.

Thoughts?

Lets start from the beginning... What ARE you doing?

1- What version of CrossOver Games are you running?
2- What kind of Mac?
3- What version of OSX?
4- Are you using the CrossTie installer, or trying to "do it yourself."

5- What CD installer?

It is no longer possible to Install LOTRO by using either the SOA CD Distribution of the MOM DVD distribution.
(You can but to do so requires some pretty sophisticated gymnastics and several days of time.)

Use the CrossTie installer and all of the work is done for you... you just need to sit and watch. The Download takes 6-9 hours and the install takes another 4-6 hours. Then another 45 minutes or so for whatever patch needs to be installed (if any).

I have a complete description of what is happening on my website:
http://www.mcgillsociety.org/PyLotRO/index.html

LOTRO installs and runs on OSX Lion with no problems using the current version of CXG 10.1.2.

Apologies for being vague. Too much work and not enough sleep ...

  1. What version of CrossOver Games are you running?
    Trial download

2- What kind of Mac?
Mac Desktop G4 (purchased June 09 - not sure version number), 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3

3- What version of OSX?
Mac OS X (10.6.8)

4- Are you using the CrossTie installer, or trying to "do it yourself."
Using CrossTie Installer, but see comments below.

5- What CD installer?
I can see how you thought I said this, but if you look closely I said "CO" as in CrossOver. My apologies for the misunderstanding.

I suspect the problem lies in a mistake I made upon my first install. I tried to do it via a downloaded installer I had from before (about a year ago). Once I realized I should be using CrossTie, I tried via that method. By that time, I had already done the damage most likely.

I attempted to do a complete uninstall of all CrossOver software and start over, but did not have the same results as were detailed in the thread below mine.

I am thinking, I need to get an actual clean start and it will work. So far I have been unable to get it to go beyond the "FINISH" button on the LOTRO installer (from within CrossTie). What happens is when I click "FINISH" after unchecking the two boxes for README and START the actual CrossOver installer just spins and spins - doesn't actually lock up though.

I have let it run for about 7 hours or so without the progress bar moving (seems to hang at roughly 90%).

I understand hitting "CANCEL" is not good, but that seems the only thing I can do.

I understand this is not supported software and would even be willing to pay a consultant to help me via remote log in / phone call. LoTRO is the only game I enjoy playing upon occasion and I am serious about leaving BootCamp behind as soon as possible:).

Thoughts?

Thought I might have a better result this time because I found that I had preferences for CrossOver remaining when I did my last uninstall.

  1. I removed the preferences
  2. reinstalled the CrossOver
  3. Clicked the CrossTie Button
  4. Executed the downloaded file from CrossTie and followed all directions as they appeared - yet same result - I get to the end of the initial install
  5. uncheck the README and LAUNCH check boxes
  6. Check FINISH
  7. the CrossOver installer continues to chug away at ??????? - nothing seems to be happening that I can see.

Will leave it running for a few hours to see if anything different happens. At this point, I am not sure where to turn unless there are independent consultants that would be willing to assist for hire.

Just in case it is important:

  1. The initial install of the bottle seems to take only about 15 minutes
  2. The initial download of the LoTRO install files take roughly 2 hours
  3. The initial install takes roughly 1 hour
  4. After that I have never been able to advance - the CrossOver Software Installer just continues to say "In Process...."

No such luck - same thing - let the Code Weaver run an additional 8 hours with no visible change / movement to the progress bar.

I think the problem lies in my first install - I must have done something wrong that I have not been able to undo so at this point, I suppose I am looking for paid support if anyone out there is interested/capable.

I have additional PC/Macs sitting around, but I really don't want to go back to the KVM switch routine - I really am committed to working/playing on a single box if at all possible.

That sounds long, unless you are counting all of the "support" programs installed in the bottle.
It sounds about right for the time from start to the apperence of the PMB and the beginning of the download of the actual game material.

Hosch wrote:

This can only be true if you have an incredibly FAST internet connection or are connected to Turbine directly. On my 6meg DSL line, the download takes between 6 and 9 hours, depending on Internet Backbone traffic. The file to be downloaded is 10+gigabytes in size, and the PMB is a "torrent type" downloader that is designed NOT to use maximum bandwidth available to it, and its speed is actually determined by the speed of its "peer" sites as by your own link speed.

On a G4 this sounds fast, even for the Quad 4.
My 27 inch iMac (mid 2010) - 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 - takes arround two hours.
I realize that install speed can relate to disk drives as it is decompressing one disk file and writing out another, but as I have the download image on one drive and am installing onto another (FireWire 800, but I forget the drive speed itself) , I should be faster than using one internal drive. ... Unless Lion REALLY messed up things in this area :)

Did you read "what happens" and follow the instructions there on my web page?
http://www.mcgillsociety.org/PyLotRO/index.html

Understand --- the Turbine Launcher DOES NOT WORK. You MUST abort it.
It sounds like this is where you are hanging.

There are only three "pieces" to to a CXG install...
1- The Game app itself, nominally in /Applications - just drag it to the trash
2- The "bottles" all of the CXG created bottles are found in <user>/Library/Application Support/CrossOver Games/
-- simply delete that entire folder.
3- The preferences files for CXG are stored in <user>/Library/Preferences/
com.codeweavers.crossover CD helper.plist
com.codeweavers.CrossOverGames.plist
com.codeweavers.CrossOverGames.plist.lockfile
com.codeweavers.CrossOverTieLauncher.plist
com.codeweavers.CrossOverTieLauncher.plist.lockfile

"CXG Applications" (i.e. games) store their files in <user>/Documents/<game name> ... such as...
<user>/Documents/The Lord of the Rings Online or <user>/Documents/Dungeons and Dragons Online

Made it through the install process by doing the following:

  1. When I get to the end of initial installation for LoTRO UNCHECK "README" and "LAUNCH" check boxes
  2. CLICK "Finish"
  3. Here was the key - DON'T CLICK the "CANCEL" button when the CrossOver Software Installer continues to spin indefinitely - DO CLICK the small "x" beside "install lord of the rings online" - be careful NOT to click the small "x" on the overall installation process - the one you should click is INSIDE the drop down box that shows what has been installed and is being installed.
  4. Wait for it to finish setting paths (about 15 seconds)
  5. CLICK "Done"
  6. Locate PyLOTRO in the CrossOver Menu > Programs > PyLOTRO
  7. Initial errors are normal when you first launch PyLOTRO
  8. Do a search under the compatibility section of this site and follow the tips for setting up PyLOTRO to PATCH

I am thinking all will go fine from here - mine is patching right now.

Thanks to William and Quan for their help:).
