I am cuing up lotro to install and my sweet & blazing internet
connection is telling me it will take 50 hours to install. Ouch!
Anyone have any ideas on how to do this a bit faster?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... LOTRO is over 10 Gigabytes in size...! There was a time when you could install from the MOM DVD (but it still took hours); However today, there have been several HUGE updates (including Mirkwood) that the time necessary to "patch" the MOM DVDs to current is actually a longer process!
What about installing it on a external hard drive at a different
location and then somehow getting it back onto my computer?
This becomes a semi-reasonable alternative. Installing on an external drive is actually a "good practice" since, because of the size of the installation, the probability of getting contiguous disk space on any internal drive is virtually nil... hence all sorts of "slowing" effects are possible.
It's actually easy to do. See the "Tips & Tricks" -- "To move LOTRO from one bottle to another" for basic background information -- the main trick is to create the folder "CrossOver Games" on your external drive, then link that into "<you>/Library/Applications Support/" then launch CXG and run CrossTie.
The external drive process is actually quite simple and quick for any new installation. For an existing installation, you need to DRAG (copy) the folder, "CrossOver Games" from "<you>/Library/Applications Support/" to your external drive, then delete the original file and create the link. Depending on the number of bottles you have, and how big they are, that can take a bit... if you don't care about them... just delete the folder!
Once you have your external drive, see if you can find a "hot" Internet Cafe -- or friend's house or work:) -- which has a fast internet connection; and which you can access for about 4+ hours. (I have a 6meg DSL connection and it still take about 4.5 hours to do the download, and then another couple of hours after that for the install to run.
The good news... With CXG 10.1, the Turbine Installer -- Pando Media Booster (PMB) now works. PMB is a "Torrent" type installer... this means that you can interrupt and resume it and it will pick-up where it left off... the downside of this is the fact that YOUR connection speed has less an impact on the download process as both the number of Feed sites and THEIR connection speeds!
Best plan... start the download before dinner time... once the PMB starts its thing... enjoy a nice leisurely meal, watch the tube a bit or head to the pub for a bit of Darts and Brew... or .... then come back and see how things are doing. Get some sleep, and in the morning you should be good to go.
