I know that with the CD version of these SCUMM games, voice actors are used. ...but how do I turn on the written text?
I just started the game and the captions appear to be the default option (meaning that on my computer, I have the written text... and apparently no way of getting rid of it!).
It says "Press F9 to toggle screen text on/off", but just as with Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition (press F10 to switch between classic and special edition), I haven't found a way to use the "higher numbered" F keys.
F5 works fine when used in conjunction with the "fn" key (so no problem to save or load a game), but I'm not so lucky with F9 and F10.
Found the solution. It's 100% Apple's fault. :)
IN the Keyboard control panel, the checkbox on the keyboard tab toggles between "real" FKey functions (F1, F2, etc) and the icon printed ones (Brightness, Dashboard, etc). We all know that.
The problem is that the real FKeys are mapped to Keyboard Shortcuts BY DEFAULT. So, Even if the F9 key is normally "fast forward", and you hold down Fn-F9 to hit a "real" F9 keystroke, the Shortcut intercepts it and activates an Expose Show All Windows command (and poor little Bobbin can't write!)
All that being said (if it makes sense)...
If you have an Apple keyboard with special icons printed on the keys, go to the Keyboard & Mouse control panel, click on Keyboard Shortcuts and UNCHECK the Dock and Display items that map to FKeys F9-F15. Things will work as expected.
(This also explains why I have some trouble with Shin Megami Tensei. The F9 and higher keystrokes for demon commands never worked!)
Thanks. It works nicely for Loom.
I still can't get F10 to work in Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition, though...
You guys know all you need to do is re-assign the Mac Keyboard short cuts and it will work, right?
I was running into the same problem with F11 for full screen on Notepad++ so I just went into the Expose preferences and removed the keyboard shortcuts (which I never used) and F11 worked again.
