First steps...

Take the torch next to the gate and continue.. I'm currently stuck at level 2 not being able to find the second gate key to leads to an area with a healing crystal.

This game is all about secrets, if you think the first few levels are hard... geez wait till you go further down.
There is btw an important secret on the first room (the room you start in) if you didn't get it, it's worth going back for.

Here's a few hints:

  1. Fall down pits (there are secrets that can only be found by falling down a particular pit even.)
  2. Fire spells are useful in the the beginning and watch out for things that work like spells too. At the end game Electricity spells can be very useful too.
  3. Toorum is the man, follow his notes even if it means backtracking. Especially if it means backtracking.
  4. Food and Torches are valuable.
  5. When a torch is about to go out, you can put it in a wall socket and it will shine forever there (torches don't run out in walls).

That should get you started.

Edit: One more thing! => You can make notes on the map by clicking on it w/ a mouse. Über useful.

I only see the wall button that opens an alcove. And now I've progressed to level 5, the level with the dragon statue.

I just fall through them to make my map complete...

You mean the "Light" spell (2-5) ?

Is it Toorun or Toorum? I have a very hard time seeing if it's an N or M at the end with the hard to read italics text.

I don't use torches anymore after finding the Light spell. Too bad there's not a Food spell...

That's a nice tip, but I already stopped using torches

Took me some time to figure out how to remove them. I have restarted the game 2x since then. I also found a good site
Gamebanshee with all kinds of data.

I don't know wether my iMac is too slow but I have a hell of a time doing the time based puzzles. For the press button go backwards fast puzzle in the beginning it took me 20 tries. And the level 5 press lever, turn, move out of alcove, step sidewards, throw, turn, step 3x forward and sidewards through door is impossible for me to do in time.

I would really appreciate some savegames from people that solved level 5 and got the 2 ornate keys.
You can find them in .../My Documents/Almost Human/Legend of Grimrock

I'm not at the end boss The Undying rolling cube after removing 4 mechanical parts from him. This is a very tough fight and you have to fight him from afar with some pits in between. At the same time you have to avoid other mobs, but everything in the cube's way gets crushed. Now those bombs come in handy.

So, you can solve this game in 10-14 days. Then if you threw the bones of Toorum into a Crystal of Life you've resurrected him and you can play him in solo mode. He's a mage/fighter with double speed. Just look for any YourGibs youtube video for a video journal.

I managed to speedup my game speed by turning the graphic settings to "low". There was a Cheat Engine for the non-intel Mac that could adjust the game speed, but it was never upgraded. If you want my save game with all my level notes mail me. You can put them in .../My Documents/Almost Human/Legend of Grimrock
