Video Stuttering issues, any tips?

Hey,

I have an x1600 iMac core 2 @ 2.16 ghz and I almost have l4d2 running smooth enough to play, but not quite. Apart from a needed 5 more fps or so, I'm having issues with frequent minor stutters. They seem to be also occurring in TF2, but only if I make the resolution fairly high (in l4d2, they occur regardless of resolution). The stuttering is consistent whether there are no zombies on screen or many, and seems to skip about a half second each time. They occur at least once every 5 seconds.

my launch params are: -lv -window -novid -heapsize 1048576 -dxlevel 90 -cl_forcepreload 1 -sv_forcepreload 1

I have tried it without the preloads, with dxlevel 81 and 80, without heapsize, and with GLSL enabled and disabled, and this current config seems optimal.

I can run this under windows XP with medium shaders and medium textures at 1280x800 and get > 20 FPS at all times. I know my graphics card is pretty bad, but I really want to get > 20 FPS with everything on the absolute lowest and a resolution of at least 1024x768 under crossover.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Nick

Hey,

I, too, have an x1600 card and as for "stutters" i'm unsure of what you mean. However I do know that I get an ok framerate on 1024x768 (about 30-40 fps) but an excellent 60 fps on 800x500. I know that's tiny but it's a good framerate. basically I think we've hit the point where our cards just aren't up to par for any kind of glorious visual stimuli...

so try 800x500 (maybe even full screen + 800x500) and enjoy decent framerate with much lack in visuals until you upgrade your mac (I plan to in the next 6 months or so.)

PS - I'm curious if you've noticed L4D2 being too dark or at least darker than other games (like tf2) because I have and am looking for any tips...

Hi Keo,

Thanks for the response. I have tried 1024x768 and, unfortunately, I still get stutters (short pauses in the entire game, about half a second, occurring every 5 seconds or so).

I definitely notice l4d2 being darker than other games and darker under crossover than under windows though. I have just been tolerating it, though I don't have any suggestions on how to fix it :(

The video shuttering is common for online game play. It is common in L4D2 to have a higher ping and can lead to video shuttering. My only suggestion is to put all video settings on low.

I'm on ArchLinux with nVidia card and I also get stuttering but to a much smaller extent than 0.5 seconds.
I could almost set a clock after the stutters. Even if nothing is on the screen with good fps > 50: run.. stutter.. run.. stutter.

This IS related to multiplayer in CXGames since I don't get it in single player, but I get the same stutter if I am on a server with 250ms or on the server I administer where I get a stable 5ms (ofcourse the server is a separate computer).

This does not happen in windows, so I'd say this is a CXGames problem.
