Dec 1st Update Problems

After finally being able to play some l4d2, they released a new update and my game is broken now.

I'm getting the incomplete installation(2) error again.

Anybody else having some issues with the new l4d2 update?

Confirm.
Same issue here.
😷

Damn it!!!! You are right.

...Yep. Happening on 8.1.3 Games Linux, as well.

Same here. 8.1.3 on OS X.5

Submitted a ticket.

I'm thinking that might be part of the same issue. Are you running the exe directly?

I fear it all stems from Valve's DRM system and the Codeweavers cats are trying to hit a moving target.

UGH!
Is this how this game is going to be
I can play it every other week?
If thats the truth im done with VALVe stuff
anyway.. nothing what so ever against the Crossover Staff

At least it works for sometime before VALVe screws it up again
I Feel Sorry for you guys, im very happy to what you are all doing

same issue
Incomplete installation (2) after Dec. 1st update

iMac 3.06Ghz
4G RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512MB
Snow Leopard

before that game was crashing often -but randomly- in multiplayer games (mostly on large maps)

And same here. Thanks Valve. Meanwhile, you may want to join this:

Let's say, first thing, I'm not suggesting to do something illegal. ;)

That said I'll tell you about a little experiment I did:
I cloned my steam folder, created a new bottle, applied a little patch to the game and, damn it, it worked.

This is obviously no solution but I think it gives you a hint about were the problem is...
As usual, I must say, is those like us who pay and go legit that get ****ed.
This pisses me off much more than the fact itself that the game is not working.
Stupid Valve and their nasty DRM!

Yes... Interestingly, Spore was the most pirated game in 2008, with about 1.7 million torrent downloads... The theory is, because it used DRM (SecuROM)... I.e. using copy protection promotes piratism?

Best thing to do is to be patient.

I'm sure the cats at Codeweavers are working on a more permanent solution to the problems specific to people running L4D2 via Crossover.

I'm sure they are. I do trust these guys very much. In fact, as I pointed out, I wasn't offering a solution or any course of action.
I was just bragging and making a point at the same time... ;)

If we look what has happened with various online music store I'd say yes since they either started selling no-drm files or they closed down. :)
The problem is that people perceive digital downloads as goods but (at least in EU) digital download are considered and taxed as services. When you buy a good you want to own it, fully. And music is perceived as a good, no matter what the law says.
And besides that, companies who put the protection of intellectual rights at a higher priority than their customer's satisfaction will have to face piracy... and loose.

Yeah, but Valve is considered pretty generous when it comes to DRM, and are proponents of not using conventional DRM, such as SecuROM, which has more malicious and restrictive settings. In fact, Steam technically doesn't use traditional DRM, and uses more of a lock and key system. However, they would rather leave us out to dry then possibly segment the Left 4 Dead 2 community even more. The problem is Valve's though, and not Crossover's at all.

Some discussion on the Steam forums about converting drives to NTFS clearing up most of the DRM related issues.

Not sure how this applies to us, but there is some hope perhaps.

seems to be happening after every update. This is the only game I have seen Valve have this COMPLETING INSTALLATION setup like that. I don't know if it's the way the install is trying to work and CrossOver Games isn't allowing it or if it's something completely else but I'm sure we will see this fixed soon.

The "Completing Install" is part of Valve's copy protection mechanism. Codeweavers are working on a solution, according to the ticket system. Hang tight, hopefully the next fix will be more permanent.

Thing is.

If I launch the application from my Library:Application Support:CrossoverGames:shittonoffileshere:Steamapps:Left4Dead2:Left4Dead.exe I get the "Could not load library client" error.

When I try to launch it from Steam itself I get the "Completing installation" Steam Error.

Hope this will be fixed soon :s

That's because when you launch the game from your Library, you're launching it directly. It doesn't try to connect to Steam, but the file that causes the problems with installation (client.dll) is still in there. So the game just boots and then refuses to run cause the file's not properly DRM'd, and what have you. They're both the same issue.

Thank you very much kind sir for that information. Now if no one minds, I'd like to eviscerate some zombies please. With a chainsaw if I may.

Yes, I'd rather they make a more permanent solution than having to play cat-n-mouse with each update.

I don't care how long it take as long as it is done before the LAN party I'm going too in the middle of January.

I really hope to God that this fix will be released before I go on Winter break on the 23rd of December. One thing I'm concerned about is that if this fix conflicts with any of the other games like Half-Life 2, Counter Strike: Source, Zombie Panic: Source, Garry's Mod.
