READ ME!!! Left4Dead 2 - prior to moving to the 'Unsupported Build' - error 53

We have a fix in progress for the current Left4Dead 2 users.

If you are a Mac user, please do not move to this build at all at this time. We are working on a fix if Left4Dead 2 is unplayable due to error 53.

Linux Users:

If you have an account on our site, you should have access to the 'Unsupported Builds' section:

http://www.codeweavers.com/account/downloads/?_dl=unsupported

This will help with 'error 53' but has not been thoroughly tested. Please move to it at your own risk. We will continue to work on the issue and hope to have a more permanent fix in place by some time tomorrow.

If Left4Dead 2 is currently working for you, please do not reinstall it. At this time, a fresh install is known to break Left4Dead 2 via CrossOver Games.

We will keep you posted.

Will this build also help with the Witch crash issue some people are having?

Maybe. But I would highly appreciate it if you would open a support ticket (or email info@codeweavers.com) ASAP for the 'special' zombie crashes if this build does not solve it. Please archive your bottle if you are considering moving to this build. I cannot stress enough that we have not done thorough tests on all aspects of this build.

Already Done
http://www.codeweavers.com/support/tickets/browse/?ticket_id=771924
But then again thats not with the 8.1.1, which Im testing right now

I'm a linux user - this build started the game immediately for me. I backed up my Borderlands Bottle - didn't bother with the L4D2 bottle as it hadn't been working anyways.

I was able to play a single player version quickly today. I will try a multiplayer co-op version as soon as I can - maybe tonight, at the latest on Saturday and will try borderlands tonight to see if it still works too.

I haven't had an opportunity to play through very far - just the first few rooms of the hotel. Will try that out as soon as possible too.

Hey!!! Hey!!! Spoilers!

Hey wait - how is describing the first 30 seconds of a game considered a spoiler?

:X

Oops. :P

Whoot! Played a whole map on single player. The game installed great, ran great, and didn't crash after I kill a witch.
With the unsupported build that is

So, the Mac version of this doesn't assist with this issue at all?

Just wanted to confirm that this got me past error 53, which I started to get out of nowhere after a crash in Scavenge mode.

Thanks, CrossOver staff. =D

Glad to hear we are bringing some joy. The Mac version is not fixing this error, but we are on it bright and early this morning. Hopefully we will have something soon!

New possibility for Mac users that you can try right now (if you are seeing this problem):

First, grab the CrossOver Games 8.1.1 build and install it
go to:
http://dl.codeweavers.com
access code:
l4d2joy

download the .reg file

Start CrossOver Games
Select Programs, Run Command...

Specify your Steam bottle and run 'regedit'

When the registry editor opens, import the .reg file.

Left4Dead 2 should now start.

Please note, we are working on a build with this enhancement added to it for Mac users and on a supported build that we expect to release for all users later today. If you do not want to give this workaround a shot, stay tuned and we will update.

Should be working now, download Crossover Games 8.1.2 from your My Downloads and overwrite your existing install to upgrade.

I downloaded 8.1.2 for Mac, and it is working again. However, for some reason, none of the new gore effects are working. Also, sometimes the video in the background of the menu doesn't load. Am I the only one with these problems? Besides this, the game runs great on recommended settings.

There is a known instability (crashiness) of L4D2 that affects both Windows users and CrossOver users, although it affects CrossOver users much, much more. Passing the -lv launch option seems to reduce it nearly completely, so we inject it into the game's options automatically. Unfortunately, the -lv option is the "low violence" (gore) option. You can experiment with removing it from the launch options. You might be one of the lucky few for who aren't affected by the crashiness, but more likely the game will crash within a minute or two of entering a level.

I took -lv out of the launch options and was able to run without any noticeable errors for two chapters. I still have the crash when the which is startled with or without -lv in the launch options, however.

Thank you. I took -lv out of the launch options and played two chapters without any noticeable errors or differences to when it was in the launch options. I still have the witch crash with or without -lv in the launch options, however.

EDIT: Sorry for double post

We're trying to identify common factors for who can safely run without -lv and who gets crashes. Can you describe your OS and hardware? Also, if you're willing, what continent or country are you in and what language is Steam/L4D2 running in?

i got a problem now....it works...but whenever the team dies...it just dose nothin....freeze =/....common problem?

how you take the -lv out?

L4d2 Got an update about 30 minutes ago
idk if this is just me but i got
Incomplete Installation (2)

Game worked fine before this steam update
except for the witch crash

But whats up?

My Comp? Crossover Games? Steam?

Any Fixes or Updates in the mix?

I'm getting the same issue. :/

"Incomplete Installation (2)"

i also got the ii(2) error. i was in-game when the server i was on shut down for the new update. steam updated, restarted the game, and now gives this error on startup after the completing installation 1% window.

yah whats up guys?
was working fine this morning cept for the witch

Exact Same Problem

Same issue with the "finishing installation 1%" message than an error.

MacBookPro
2.4ghz C2D
4GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 256 MB
Mac OS 10.6.2

Again, it appears to be a problem with the game, not Crossover. There're a ton of people in the Steam forums complaining about install errors after the patch.

Same stuff. I'm running a Macbook pro with leopard 10.5.8, 2.16Ghz, 2 GB memory, and ATI Radeon X1600.

Same here. I'm getting the exact same issue. iMac Intel, 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600, 256 MB VRAM

Damn, This sucks

Any Idea when the next update will be
I have nothing against Crossover Games in Anyway... You guys rock.. Keep up the good Work :D

We are staging CrossOver Games 8.1.3 right now which will fix the 'Incomplete Install (2)' error on Left4Dead 2 (they should be available in the next 10-15 minutes). We've also incorporated a fix for the ATI Macs affected by the 10.6.2 driver bug.

Please submit a Support Ticket or send an email to info@codeweavers.com if you see any problems with CrossOver Games 8.1.3.

Thank you. This update fixed the Incomplete Install error, the witch error, the chapter switching error, and even allowed me to turn up the graphics. I was able to play through all of Dead Center without any noticeable hitches or glitches. All of my problems have been fixed. Thank You, Codeweavers.

Has anyone tested this on X1600 Macs yet? I know it's not a great card, but should at least be playable on low settings if this fixed the backbuffer issue with it.

This fixed the game for me too. I even tried without the -lv option and had no problem killing the witch or enter a new chapter so far. Though I have a graphical glitch in the game (it's present with and without -lv activated) on the playable characters. Bits and pieces of their bodies are missing on their heads and torso. There are just black patches instead. Any other who have had the same problem?

I'm currently running the game on a Mac Pro (MacPro3,1 2x2,8ghz quad, 6gb ram, 8800gt).

CXG 8.1.3 made me to register my demo version to a full product. L4D2 runs just great, even without the -lv option. Thanks a lot.

turn your shaders down to medium and model detail to low. you can still keep effects on high though. if i set my shaders above medium [to high or highest] i get the missing textures, but i also don't see any rain in the hard rain campaign. still playable for sure, and still looks great, but that's the main reason i gave it a silver medal vs. gold.

We've tested on that Mac in-house... don't expect great framerates (we felt it was nearly 'unplayable'). But, it does run.

It works excellent for me. I play all my games in an 800x600 window on that machine. That may be why it played better for me than the typical user.

After the new Steam Client update went out today, I haven't been able to play it. I'm getting "Incomplete Install (Error 2)" again. I'm grateful for all that you've done to help support this product, and I realize that all the problems are coming from Valve's updates. I wouldn't get to play this game at all if it wasn't for all the work the Codeweavers Staff puts in. I am willing to wait as long as it takes to fix these problems for good. I realize you all have friends and families you want to spend the holidays with. I just want to thank you for all of the work you've put in to allow such a small part of the gaming community to play these games. Just having it run so well yesterday and this morning was worth it. I only wish that Valve would give you guys more support.

Oh man.. im having no luck.

Managed to install L4D2 fine.. Launch the game, watch (or skip) the intro movie, then the loading screens shrinks then disappears altogether.

Running crossover games (demo) 8.1.3 on a Mac Pro.

Have been through the forums, but no one seems to be having the same issue as me :/

Have you altered any registry settings, specifically useGSGL or VideoMemorySize under CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D?

The good news is... we see this in-house on a fresh install. The bad news is... it's busted right now.

You should submit a support ticket or send an email to info@codeweavers.com; include your computer specs (graphics card, OS version). We're working on this today for certain; stay tuned to the forums!
