How I got L4D2 Working

I will not support this method, and the fix is not my fix but someone elses posted cross posted here because it works in this case as well.
However I am fiddling to get this working further.

The game is playable but the sound quite frankly makes the game harder to play.

Bugs after the fix:
Long pauses between videos [Fixed]
Sound Stuttering [Fixed]
Some voices are low or missing from some cutscenes [mainly intro]

  1. Install the L4D2 demo using Steam
  2. Quit Steam
In the home folder in terminal:
  3. wget http://www.tghost.co.uk/wine/steamappscommon.tar.gz
  4. cd .cxgames/Unsupported/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/ (Assuming Unsupported is the bottle you installed steam in)
  5. tar -xvf ~/steamappscommon.tar.gz
  6. Restart Steam
  7. Start L4D2 demo

Edit:

How I fixed the stuttering was rather simple. Go into your bottle configuration, select to configure your bottle, open up winecfg, and make sure you have an audio driver selected. Apply one if you don't and ensure that only OSS sound is selected. After these two things, L4D2 should be pretty much Gold (As far as I'm concerned, the low voices don't seem noticeable or isn't affected in game. This also fixed the long pauses.

works great, excellent work dude.

I tried this and it works mostly great. Played through the single player campaign and didn't notice any sound problems on my MacBook. However, I did find that everytime I would use the Sword melee weapon the game would crash completely. No idea how to get around that.

Helped me too, getting L4D2 to run. Thanks!

Although I don't quite understand, why that actually works. Given that I can run L4D2 perfectly on Windows, a copy of the L4D2 directory from there should already contain all valid files. But whatever, at least it works now :D

It didn't really help me, it allowed me to watch the intro (with no voices) and see the main menu, but close the game as soon as i tried to play it. Then it gave me the can not complete install error (53) again :(

i tried this but when i type "cd .cxgames/Unsupported/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/" in terminal it says "no such file or directory" and when i deleted the "Unsupported" part of it it said the same thing. How do i get it to work?

HOLY JESUS
i had to go into the steamapps folder step by step going through each folder (bcuz i suck lol) and i GOT IT TO WORK :D
thanks dude you are my new hero

Edit:
it does go into the game but when a game (singleplayer or multiplayer) is almost done loading it exits out without displaying a message or anything. why is this happening???

Same thing happening for me. Start a game single or multi and at about 95% complete loading, the game crashes. It's the farthest I've gotten but still no luck playing. And I pre-ordered like a sucker...lulz.

The reason it works was explained by the person who made that archive.

It works because after you start L4D2 for the first time files are updated, and under wine these changes fail. These files are all the updated files after someone boots the game up for the first time.

I really can't try to solve all the issues (I mean I'm not experiencing the same ones so I really don't have anything to recommend)

This issue has been fixed in CXG 8.1 rc1. It sounds like codeweavers in pushing for a release not longer after (if not before) the full game is released.

PS It runs great
