L4D2 Crash; Access Violation (0xc0000005)

Today I selected to upgrade to the Steam UI Beta. After restarting then I thought about looking here where I found that a new, unsupported version of CXG was needed and a new Vista bottle. After installing 8.2.0 I decided I didn't need the Steam UI that bad so I ran (Path)\Steam.exe -clearbeta. Steam restarted fine and I attempted to pay L4D2 again. The Valve screen shows up as well as the L4D2 trailer. However instead of loading the menu the app crashes back to Steam after I space through or wait for the trailer. I uploaded the minidump file to bugdump and it reports: Access violation (0xc0000005).

I've tried repairing Steam and verifying the game files, to no avail. My internet connection is somewhat limited so I'm trying to avoid uninstalling everything and re-installing L4D2 from scratch. Is there anything else I can try to get this working again? Everything worked fairly well with 8.1.4 on my Macbook Pro 10.5.8 with 2.66GHZ and 4MB RAM.

Hi,

When 8.2.0 was released, a warning was issued with the release
notice saying something to the effect of "this is only for those
wishing to play startrek online, and you should not use 8.2.0 with
or as an upgrade to your working 8.1.4 installation - it may break
things"....you have no doubt missed seeing this warning?

Have you backed up your Steam games at all? I guess not...but learn
the lesson if this is the case -- I backup my Steam games even before
I play with them the first time, just to avoid possible issue like this.
If you had backups, you could just blow away your existing crossover
installation, do a fresh install of crossover and Steam then restore
your backups....

I can't advise you on how to possibly recover from this - I don't have
a Mac to test/check with....I have recovered from incidents like this
without resorting to backups, but I'm unsure if the procedure would
work on the Mac -- especially so with 8.2.0 as it's an unsupported build
and might be doing/done things that supported crossover build don't...

Maybe some Mac user can help here, but, with backups, you'd probably
already have this fixed by now...

Cheers!

Nope, I didn't see that warning as my search led me directly to the page that recommended 8.2.0 for the Beta Steam UI with no mention of Star Trek Online. Oh well I'll just blow everything away and reload the game overnight...or over the next couple of nights depending on how the internet decides to work.

For the record, here's the link to that announcement;

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/forums/unsupported/?t=21;mhl=72782;msg=72782#msg72782

As you can see, you probably wouldn't have tried what you
did if you'd seen that...

Cheers!

Unless I'm missing something, you haven't tried just reverting to 8.1.4. You shouldn't need to reinstall everything. Hopefully, your existing bottles should just "upgrade" (downgrade) successfully and will start working again.

Sorry I stopped updating. I did revert to 8.1.4 and that worked with the old Steam. However yesterday when Steam upgraded to the new UI I installed 9.0.0 and get the same problem. On my trouble ticket the -novid and -windowed options were recommended but all that did was get me a white X-window with the L4D2 title that closed after a few seconds. I also deleted the clientregistry.blob based on the ticket suggestion and got nowhere.

Anyway my trouble ticket is Ticket 796730 [link=http://www.codeweavers.com/support/tickets/browse/?ticket_id=796730][/link] if anyone wants to continue the discussion there.
