L4D and L4D2 - Entire System Lock-Up (Linux - openSuse 11.2)

Hello,

I have been trying out CrossOver for almost a week now in hopes of finally getting away from Windows and I have tried all sorts of suggestions given in these topics and the ones listed under "Tips & Tricks" with zero success.

Both L4D and L4D2 will load to the main menu but when the campaign loading bar goes right over to the end, the system locks up. I have tried both full screen and window mode with video options all set to low.

I have not yet downloaded and tried my other steam games like UT2K4 and UT3 because they are not as important as L4D and L4D2.

My system configuration is:

Operating System: openSuse 11.2
HDD: Western Digital 500GB SATA
Desktop: KDE 4.3.1 R6
CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160 @ 1.8GHz
Memory: 4GB DDR
Video: ATI HD4850 512MB GDDR3 using driver FGLRX w/dual display

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you.

Try checking the "Driver Emulation" checkbox under Audio in winecfg. The effect is to change the crash from a hard lockup to a soft lockup, which you can escape by killing the game process from a remote ssh session (I use my laptop for this).

If it's any comfort, you are not alone - many Windows users are also experiencing this problem (there's a large crash thread in the forums where many people have reported similar symptoms). There appear to be a number of different causes, and Valve has tried twice to fix the problem without much success.

Andrew,

I had this issue (running openSuSE 11.2) until I recently installed the 9.12 catalyst drivers. Seems it solved the problem, at least for me.
