Shader quality crashes the game

I am on:

Arch Linux 64-bit
Intel Core i5 2500k 3.3 GHz
Nvidia GeForce 450 GTS 1GB

L4D2 crashes as soon as I enter into a game (as soon as it starts to render graphics), and I have been playing around with the video settings in L4D2 to get it let me in the game. I found that setting the shader quality to "high" or "very high" is what crashes the game. All other settings I have at their maximum, and I have multicore rendering disabled. I tried to use the reg key UseGLSL and setting it to disabled but all it did was make some wierd things happen with shaders when I set it to "high", and it eventually crashed again. Does anyone know of a way to get this work work? I feel the game doesn't look good enough with shaders on medium :)
