Now before anyone says "dude, there's a brightness setting in the in-game options" I'm going to say "It's grayed out and does nothing"

When playing levels with sunlight everything is.. fairly visible... could be brighter. but when in levels like the dark mall or in the burning hotel I can barely see anything (except, of course, fire)

My specs are a dual core 2.33 ghz processor, 3 gigs of ram, and an old radeon x1600 graphics card (which is probably where the problem is)

Are you running the game in fullscreen mode? Changing the brightness through the GUI only works if you're running in fullscreen.

You can also try changing it through the console, though: just type "mat_monitorgamma 1.6" (or any value you want, if I remember correctly 1.6 is the brightest).

With all that said I remember a really annoying problem with L4D1 related to brightness that might be the one you're having... though, I don't remember any fixes to that other than switching focus to something else, and then back.

as for an annoying brightness problem with L4D1 I had an issue like that where the exposure made everything toooooo dark. to fix I just turned off multicore rendering...

interestingly enough multi-core rendering is grayed out on l4d2... hmm....
