Incomplete Installation of Left 4 Dead 2 (2)

i get this error every time i start the game. [the full steam version, not the demo]

if i try and run the game in offline mode, i bypass the installation error, get to see the intro video, but then l4d2 causes a 'windows crash' and sends me back to the steam gui. been trying workarounds all night to no avail. guess we'll have to wait some more.. =\

I have the same issue. I've also verified the data integrity, tried re-downloading, and switched to Vista mode to see if that'd make a difference. So far nothing.

If you use the -novid launch option the game just opens for a second and immediately crashes.

Edit:

Looking at the forums it seems this may be an issue of Valve's part.

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1028991

i've got the same problem with the demo and full game but i've tested on windows 7 rc1 using the backup system from steam and it worked without problem... I don't know why it only happen on crossover!

[edit] after installing the backup game from steam via crossover into my windoes i've got the same error. I had to redownload the full game on windows. i'll post later if this new download works on crossover or not.

Cheers

update: 8.1.0rc3 got me up and running. this issue has been resolved. however, there is another issue that crashes my game after someone startles and is incapped by a witch. upon revival the audio loops and crashes back to the steam gui. getting closer to perfection though!!

Yeah, I have the same glitch with the witch.

Same here. I noticed that everytime I verfied the files after that, 1 or 2 had gone bad.

Im redownloading l4d2 to see if that fixes it

Tried redownloading myself twice, no help. Game cache verification runs through OK too. :/

I started getting this last night after restarting my computer - it was working fine before, and I didn't change any of the software on my machine. I'm running CrossOver Games 8.1.2 on Mac OSX 10.6.2.

This started after an L4D2 update. I'm getting the same error myself - and it appears windows users are also getting the error. It sucks, but it's not crossover's fault. However, I expect they will try hard to fix it.

Valve is starting to bust Mah B****!!! I go to sit down and play some L4D2 and the update breaks it. Is there a way to not have the updates forced onto you.

You might be able to execute the game directly. find the left4dead2.exe in the steam directory and run it instead of steam. I don't know if that will avoid updates - but I suspect it will.

In fact, doing this now gets you to the startup screens - but it crashes for me soon after.

Uninstall, reinstall, and verifying the files dose not resolve the issue.

The solution is to wait and try not to cry. Be sure to keep sharp objects away from you.

There's no reason to uninstall/reinstall at this time. It won't help. Nor will downgrading, changing launch options, launching steam and launching L4D2 via 'Run Command...'.

Be patient I suppose. We are working on it!

Looks like Valve is requesting information from those experiencing the Incomplete Install error.

I don't know how useful info from us will be, though. Codeweavers, any suggestions on that front?

Hi,

I can tell you that's a watch&see thing there - obviously, if users on 'real' windows systems are having
the same issue (although it might not be the exact same problem/cause), the attitude to have is one of "hope"
-- that is, hope the eventual fix for these windows users, also is an effective fix for the same issues users
are encountering with crossover/wine. When stuff like this happens, I'm pretty sure the codeweavers devs
end up feeling like they're "stuck between a rock, and a tight place" -- you'd like to do something with your
code to make things work for customers, but what if your code's correct and it's -their- problem, and after
changing your code you have to change it back again once they fix -their- end...catch22, round in circles
chasing your tale kind of thing ; my guess is, the devs and ninjas are watching this thread too...

Cheers!

It's interesting...

Valve has always been receptive to CrossOver Games and actually quite helpful. I can't say that posting your specs won't get you flamed by Windows users (I've had a couple of bad experiences personally), but I believe that Valve would take the information down. I know they are extremely busy at this point (as are we) but data is data and it can't hurt to give it. You are their customer too!

We are staging CrossOver Games 8.1.3 right now which will fix the 'Incomplete Install (2)' error on Left4Dead 2 (they should be available in the next 10-15 minutes). We've also incorporated a fix for the ATI Macs affected by the 10.6.2 driver bug.

Please submit a Support Ticket or send an email to info@codeweavers.com if you see any problems with CrossOver Games 8.1.3.

You've taught me a valuable lesson that patience is a virtue, a lesson that I should have already learned as a father.

I went through the time and trouble of installing Boot Camp (which I was STILL setting up as I read this) and I could have just waited for you guys. I'll be ready to test as soon as this is ready.

w00t! It's working for me. Nice work guys!

Did you guys beat Valve to the punch in fixing this bug? Gonna share your finding with them?

OMG it works perfectly! There are some funky video things like flare around barrel fires and a green glow before a map starts, but that may be part of the workaround (if that is what is being used) and it doesn't affect gameplay in the least. Thanks a bunch!

Ugg it fixed the install issue but now the game crashes after 10-15 minutes of play :|
I sent an email about it :|

crossposting, but:

awesome!! i will definitely be testing this when i get home from work. you guys are way more on top of things than valve has been..

It's working!

Man, awesome job guys. Congrats, and thanks for fixing the game (...again) =p.

Great Stuff!

Thank You very much for fixing it.

Looks like I spoke too soon...

VALVe released a new Steam client today, which seems to have fixed the issue for windows users. However, it broke the game for me, bringing the Installation Error (2) back.

Anyone else having the same issue or am I just incredibly unlucky? S=

I sent a ticket, just in case.

I'm starting to HATE VALVE with a passion, yeah after a WEEK I got to play this game for a whole 5 minutes today before they updated Steam and screwed me again.

Thanks for all the effort Valve, took you since Saturday to "fix" this and I'm back to owning a broken game.

Here's a 1 finger salute to Valve! Your #1 Valve!

You need to chill out. The game's not made to work on Mac and Linux. They updated it so that it works well on Windows: their actual audience. Crossover and Wine will catch up soon enough and you'll be able to play.

Valve makes top-notch games, you can't really blame them for this.

Yes, I'm having the exact same issue. I was playing the game some two hours earlier today, but now the Installation Error (2) is back for me too... :(

Hey Louis, here's an analogy for you:

I'll sell you a book, before it's released with a promise that you can read the first few chapters.

You go home to read it and realize...."Hey this book only has pages 1 & 2!"

So 4-5 days later I send you a package with the "Full book". You pick it up to read and the pages are blank. I tell you sorry, I noticed this and I'm working on a fix for you.

The book releases to everyone, 1/2 get a full book 1/2 the customers get a blank book. 4-5 days later I send out the "Full book" again and now 60% can read the book and only 40% cannot.

2 weeks after the Release date and not even all the Windows Users can play this game yet! They are selling a broken product for Windows, Linux and Mac.

You say it's only a game, I say whatever I spend my hard earned money on should WORK WHEN I PURCHASE IT!

PS 4 of my friends pre-purchased this for WINDOWS and still cannot play either, read the Steam Forums Louis and you'll see a lot of WINDOWS users are screwed too.

And please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Incomplete Installation (2) errors because of the Valve/Steam DRM? So basically I'm a pre-purchasing customer that's cannot play the game because they are trying to stop people from stealing it?

Yeah, I have the exact same problem. I was worried it was on my end, but it looks like other people are having it too.

Well, the story of the day is... don't reinstall if you don't have to. If your install of Left4Dead 2 is working, don't reinstall!

Now, sometimes even with our fix, you will still get this error. Restart Steam... it may then get past it (not always).

But please, please, please don't reinstall if Left4Dead 2 is working for you!

is there any way to roll back to 8.1.2? apparently valve 'fixed' the incomplete installation (2) error from the 21st today, but it doesn't work under 8.1.3. figured we could try it under 8.1.2 and see if we'll be able to play over thanksgiving weekend..?

8.1.2 is available in the 'My Downloads' section of your account under the 'archived downloads' section.

Good luck!

No, they fixed the incomplete installation error (53), not error (2). I tried it, and you still get error (2). Thanks for the suggestion, though.

This was solved for me in 8.1.3. I'm now getting crashes when I encounter a witch!!!!!

Forrest M. wrote:

I can get about 1-8 minutes game play in Campaigns and it crashes to desktop, with audio repeating until I quit CXgames 8.1.3. I can play Survivor Mode and Scavenger Mode for a long time.

Presumably I'm crashing when the game has to load more of the map into memory. On Survivor and Scavenger it's a smaller map with no changes. Just a hunch on my part, hope that helps.

Do either of these improve if you lower your graphics settings?

I've tried high video settings and the lowest video setting with the same crash results. (Difference in FPS but same crashes)

I recently performed a Repair Disc Permissions on my C-drive, then i tried rolling back to a previous point in time before performing this 'disc permissions' crap but i wasnt successful in restoring, TM was being stupid. Could Repair Disc Permissions also be the reason why Left4Dead2 keeps giving me Installation Error (2) when i try to run it???? Or is this because of the new Left4Dead2 update via Steam?????

Thank you all for your response and support.

EDIT: I'm running CrossOver v8.1.3, Mac OSX 10.6.2

We're all getting the Install Error (2), so I doubt it has anything to do with Repair Disk Permissions. It is most likely a result of Valve's copy protection mechanism (but I've had no official conformation of this, so I may be talking about of my butt).

Hopefully they're be an update from Codeweavers soon.

Looks like the issue was resolved on a steam update from 12/04/2009 for windows users. I am still getting the same issue when I run the game through CXG.

For some apparent reason i never got this issue on my PC, this is only happening on my Macbook Pro. I've been playing L4D2 on my PC including the updates with no crashes or Installation Error (#). Will the fix be automatically implemented (when it's available ofc) whenever I start Steam or will i have to manually install the fix??

From what I understand, the problem is related to VALVe's new DRM and WINE's inability to emulate the filesystem said DRM requires to work. That's why you can play in your PC (which I'm assuming runs windows) and not in OSX.

The fix, when there's one, will most likely come in the form of a new version of CrossOver Games. Or maybe VALVe'll change how the DRM works, in which case the game'll magically run once they patch it that way. Who knows, really =S.

From what I am seeing, this will need to be a release from the CXG staff. The patch yesterday from VALVe was suppose to resolve the issue in regards to NTFS being a requirement of the DRM; and there are quite a few of reports that state that the issue was resolved on fat32 filesystems. However, this was by no means a "magical" fix for us CXG'ers leaving the continued issues of "file validation" around.

Any new update regarding this? I still get the same incomplete error 2 crap.. Is crossover team doing anything about this? or been made aware? We need an update ASAP!~

They are aware of the issue and are actively working to resolve it. I'm betting they where playing the waiting game for Valve to release the patch to resolve the issue on Windows system so that way they would not have to patch again after it was released. Hopefully we will see an update at some point this coming week. Best thing you can do right now is to use one of your votes to bump up L4D2 another point so they know how many people are waiting on the fix ;)

Where can I bump vote for L4D2 in this forum? Thanks

EDIT: Never mind, i found where to do it. I'll be looking fwd for the fix, and hopefully it wont conflict with my other Steam games (Counter Strike Source, Zombie Panic Source).

Don't worry L4D2 is already an officially supported application and we've already submitted tickets to the support system. Codeweavers are aware of the issue and working on a solution.

I upgraded to the lastest version of crossover games (8.1.3) yesterday and since I cannot start L4D2 anymore. Is this the same error as described as above?
Can't seem to file a bug on on this page so I post it here.

If you (codeweavers devs/qa) need some more information please let me know.

Thanks in advantage,
San

Which latest version? CrossOver Games 8.1.3 or 8.1.4?

8.1.4 is in the Unsupported Builds section of your 'My Downloads' and is the current fix for this error. Before moving to it, please archive your bottles. If you are experiencing this error with 8.1.4 (and I just played... tested!) we want and need to know ASAP!
