java gui rendering missing on OSX

The jre 1.4 installation was completed and the right plug in
is installed in ie 6 (in a win 98 bottle).

If I load an applet the applet window whent gray ad nothing is re
rendered.

This happen also in a swing application, like the java control panel app.

Any suggestion
