If you hear some sound then it is finding a sound device. Have you tried different music files? What other software do you have installed? What sound card do you have?
Need more details. What version of CXO are you trying to run? (I'm assuming 4.1). What distro (i.e. Fedora, Mandrake, Suse, etc...)? What sound hardware do you have (i.e. Sound Blaster LIVE!, Intel 8x0, etc..)? Are you using ARTS, ALSA, or OSS?
That being said, I've personally dealt with the same issue on my laptop (Fedora 3, i8x0, ALSA). I've posted earlier on how I got it to work (on 11-18-2004).
I am working on re-formatting some info to add to the tips and tricks as soon as I can get a chance to catch a breath(I'm in the middle of a HUGE security project at work).
When i upgrade to kernel 2.6.x, i had this kind of problem, the meter advance 2 second without any sound. To fix this problem i configured cxoffice to use winealsa driver.
