iTunes over local network.

Ok this is very bizarre. Playing an iTunes song off my local disk gets me 85%-95% cpu usage.

Here's the kicker. If I play off someone elses shared music here in the office, the cpu usage is UNDER 15% consistantly and the music quality is great.

So very very odd. Tried it a couple of times and the result was consistent. Very wierd.

Yep, I can also reproduce that. I get about 7% cpu usage when I play back over Rendezvous, but 95% if I play back songs off the local disk. wineserver uses about 94% CPU according to "top" and interestingly, it says it's almost entirely the system that uses the cpu: "4% user, 92% sys, 4% idle".

However, the computer doesn't feel as if it was only 4% idle. In fact, I don't notice any difference in speed between the playback of network streams and the playback of local files. The computer still feels fast and iTunes doesn't stutter more than when playing network streams.
