Version number and broken Cross Tie installer

Dear CrossOver IrfanView users, as of 5/14/12, the IrfanView Cross Tie installer is broken. I apologize for this. My intention was to update the version number from 4.32 to 4.33 but somehow I managed (i) to break the Cross Tie script and (ii) I notice that the IrfanView Cross Tie script is no longer downloaded in the list of Community Supported Application of the CrossOver Software Installer.

Until the Cross Tie installer is fixed, please download and install IrfanView manually according to instructions in Tips & Tricks.

To avoid this type of issue in the future and to facilitate maintenance of this package as new "minor" versions are released, I suggest that we rename "Irfanview 4.33" to "IrfanView 4". This way, we only have to change the installation file name in the Cross Tie installer when a new minor version of IrfanView is released.

Let me know if you object to above renaming or if you have a suggestion how I can go about fixing the Cross Tie installer so that it is once again included in the CrossOver Software Installer "Community Supported Applications".

The installer seems to be working and it's back online... just tested it.

Thank you for all you do!

OK thanks. The Cross Tie installer works perfect once again!

I will leave the "Irfanview 4.33" application name as is for time being but, unless someone objects, at time of next minor release of IrfanView, I will change the application name to "IrfanView 4". From then on, we will only have to update the links to the updated IrfanView installers, rather than have to change the name of the application every time there is a minor update.

I just did a fresh install of Crossover 11 after deleting Version 10.

Irfanview worked before, but after installing 4.33, there is no icon to click to invoke irfanview. you can start irfanview thumbnails, but not irfanview itself.

I know how to get into the guts, but when i found iview_32 or whatever it is called, it started parallels.

Any thoughts?

In addition to the problem I discussed, I dug down and created a shortcut within the guts of the crossover files, since there was not a shortcut in the bottle.

The main reason for this is I want files to open within irfanview by default. But with this shortcut (UNLIKE the one in version 10, which worked when put into the application folder) - I cannot change the default to open via irfanview. It simply won't accept it.

Again, any help?

While I'm at it, how about ghostscript so irfanview can show pdfs? Do I just install it into the bottle by hand?

I'm not really complaining, just that this is not very automatic. lots of handwork.

And with the loss of the shortcut in the bottle directly for irfanview, I am at a loss as to how to invoke it automatically.

Thanks again for any thoughts.

I basically only have 3 needs:

Quicken 2012, Irfanview (with automatic opening by a double click), and e-sword.

I might try Office 2010, but not until I get the above three working.

I had all 3 working fine in Crossover 10, but upgraded today and it seems like a complete startover. In fact, i did give up and uninstalled 10 and all files completely - thanks for good instructions on how to do so.

Dan are you running on Mac or Linux?
I can confirm that I am able to reproduce the problem that you report, i.e., no icon for IrfanView,
on the Mac (10.6.8) with a freshly updated (11.1.0.26122) version of CrossOver.
I think this is a recent issue, i.e., with release of CrossOver 11.1.
I did not have this issue on Mac with CrossOver 11.0.0 or on Linux with CrossOver 11.0.3.

I know how to get into the guts, but when i found iview_32 or whatever it is called, it started parallels.

Just for the record, when I do the same thing on a Mac (10.6.8) with CrossOver (11.1.0.26122),
that is, when I click on the icon i_view32.exe located in
/Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/IrfanView/drive_c/Program Files/IrfanView
IrfanView will start normally. But I don't have parallels installed.

However, like you, I have not figured out how to open a file by default with IrfanView in
CrossOver 11.1 on the Mac. Pretty sure that it used to work OK with Crossover 11.0.

As a placeholder, until someone figures out how to fix this problem, I suggest that you associate the
file formats that you want to open using IrfanView with the application
/Users/dmenemen/Applications/CrossOver/IrfanView/IrfanView - Thumbnails.app
I just tried and this works - except that it also opens a second window that lists all the available files in the enclosing folder.

Thanks for both replies confirming the problem. There was no problem in 10.1 , you've confirmed this appears to be new to 11.1 vs. 11.0

I'm not surprised Parallels comes up for me - this isn't really relevant, so we'll move on from there.

The point is that there is neither an Irfanview icon now in the programs "bottle" menu, nor does the Mac allow one to select Irfanview as a default for a double click open for an image (like double click a jpg). Both of these worked for me in 10.1

Is there somewhere I should report this to make it an official "um this is broken" statement?

This issue has been forwarded to the Official CodeWeavers Ticket System. If you have observed this issue and would like to report it as well, please open a support ticket or send an email to info@codeweavers.com with a description of what you are seeing and a link to this post.

Thank you!

Thanks for the "workaround" - of using Irfanview thumbnails to open a file, but I think we both know that isn't a long term satisfactory solution, but I appreciate the short term concept.

Dan, can you try installing Irfanview 4.32 as per instructions here:
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=268;tips=1;admin=1;cmd=edit;tip_id=3928
and let me know if this fixes your problem.
Be sure to remove the Irfanview 4.33 bottle prior to installation, to make sure there will not be any directory conflicts.

Yesterday, I experimented with various versions of Crossover and of Irfanview on both a Mac (10.6.8) and on a Linux box (Ubuntu 12.04).
My tentative conclusions are that the menu problem that you report:
(i) happens for Irfanview 4.33 on the Mac, regardless of Crossover version (I tried several flavors of Crossover 10 and 11),
(ii) does not happen on Linux boxes,
(iii) does not happen on the Mac with Irfanview 4.32 and earlier versions.

It's also possible to manually create a shortcut application icon for Irfanview by using Crossover Run Command http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/mactutorial/run_only and once you've selected the .exe click the Save Command to Programs menu and that'll create an application launcher in (yourhomefolder)/Applications/Crossover.

To set Irfanview as the default program to open a document with first pick a document you want to open right-click and Get Info on that file. Under the Open With section you can set it to any program on your Mac that knows how to handle that file. Press the Change All button to set that system-wide.

Andrew, I just tried your two suggestions with fresh install of IrfanView 4.33 on CrossOver 11.1 for Mac and they both worked perfectly. Thanks, Dimitris

I will try this tomorrow - things are munged up enough that I need to delete all the bottles by hand (irfanview is sitting there in the programs menu and not recognized as a valid bottle, either).

Thanks for the suggestion.

As to this:

To set Irfanview as the default program to open a document with first pick a document you want to open right-click and Get Info on that file. Under the Open With section you can set it to any program on your Mac that knows how to handle that file. Press the Change All button to set that system-wide.

I hope this works tomorrow, but I did this with earlier irfanview bottles (4.33 and 11.1) and it would NOT let me set irfanview as the default... the "set as default button" (or whatever it says) was greyed out. Maybe following your instructions closely will get it to work. I'll do this tomorrow.

Dan, when you try to associate a document type with an application on the Mac,
be sure that you are pointing to a .app and not a .exe file.

I have put specific instructions for IrfanView 4.33 here:
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=268;tips=1
under "Install IrfanView via CrossTie".

That is, you first need to create:
(yourhomefolder)/Applications/CrossOver/IrfanView/i_view32.app
using "Save Command to Programs".

Then you should be able to associate i_view32.app
with the file types that you want it to open.

Let me know if this works, Dimitris

Andrew, Dimitris,

Thank you for your excellent suggestions. Yes, it needed to be .app and not .exe to allow default opening. Also, Save Command to Programs Menu also worked.

Just a couple of glitches (for me - technically it works fine).

Save Command to Programs Menu saves to the root of the Programs Menu, not into the bottle. Admittedly, that's what Andrew said, even though it seems wrong. I manually moved the i_view32.app into the bottle folder with finder, but the file didn't move into the bottle (within the program's program menu) until I used Refresh Program Menu.

Unfortunately, there must be some setting somewhere, because when I tried Clear and Rebuild Programs Menu, Crossover placed that file back at the root.

So, for me, I made a copy of the i_view32.app file (renamed it irfanview.app) and placed it in the Applications folder directly, then made the "default app assignment". This worked.

So my only concern - I'm scared to use Clear and Rebuild Programs Menu - anything I can do to get Crossover to recognize where I want i_view32.app to reside (i.e. in the Irfanview Bottle, not the Program root)?

Again, I'm MUCH further along, in fact, this is now totally usable, but this last bit is a nagging glitch for me.

Thanks!

Dan, I get exactly same behavior as you describe on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8).
If you want to modify the behavior of CrossOver when you "Clear and Rebuild Programs Menu..."
you will need to modify:
/Users/YourUsernameName/Library/Application\ Support/CrossOver/Bottles/Irfanview\ 4.33/desktopdata/cxmenu/cxmenu_macosx.plist
Specifically in your case, you will need to move the following lines:

<key>i_view32</key>
<dict>
 <key>Icon</key>
 <string>/Applications/CrossOver.app/Contents/SharedSupport/CrossOver/share/icons/32x32/crossover.png</string>
 <key>Command</key>
 <string>"/Users/dmenemen/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/Irfanview 4.33/desktopdata/cxmenu/StartMenu.C^5E3A^5Fusers^5Fcrossover^5FStart^2BMenu/i^5Fview32.lnk"</string>
 <key>RawPath</key>
 <string>StartMenu.C^3A_users_crossover_Start+Menu/Programs/IrfanView/i_view32.lnk</string>
</dict>

to be at the same level as "IrfanView+-+Thumbnails.lnk" and the other IrfanView menu items.

Dan, one more thing.
It's pretty straightforward to install Ghostscript in your Irfanview window so that you can use IrfanView to view pdf files.
I just added instructions for doing this in
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=268;tips=1
under "Install IrfanView via CrossTie. It works great!

Mac mini i7 8 gB RAM OS 10.8.1
CrossOver 11.2.1
I installed Irfanview433 by opening CrossOver and clicking on Install Windows Software and using Other Applications. When the window said installation complete, I clicked Done. Then I went back to the CrossOver window and clicked on 2 Run Windows Software but nothing happened. I closed CrossOver and repeated the entire process, but Run Windows software does nothing.
What am I doing wrong?

Richard, my guess is that you forgot to install "Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Redistributable".

There are instructions on how to install IrfanView in the Tips & Tricks
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=268;tips=1
The easiest way to is to use CrossTie, which automatically resolves the C++ dependency.
See the 4th Tip & Trick called: "Install IrfanView via CrossTie" tip.

If you want to install manually, see the second or third Tip and Trick,
"Installation instructions" or "Another Install Method".
(I have not personally tried the "Another Install Method".)

Let me know if you try one of the above methods and it still does not work.

The Visual Basic will not install automatically as the tip says, but I tried installing it from Other Applications. It completed the installation in the window and I clicked done, but it will not run, just as the Irfan will not run. I think Crossover does not work in Mountain Lion. Can you give me an exe from the list that will confirm proper operation? I might try 7zip.

Richard, I am moving discussion to a new thread called "IrfanView on Mountain Lion".
Please see this new thread for some suggestions:
