Info Select 2007

Having had high hopes that using "Crossover", "Info Select 2007" would work in a Linux environment, I am VERY disappointed to find that it will not run and nothing happens. As I'm no guru of these matters, I am at a loss to know what to do next.

Info Select has been a programme that in DOS and Wndows systems I have used for around 20 years, now I'm moving to Linux, I am very reluctant to leave it behind.

Can anyone give some advise or suggestion that will overcome this obstacle.

Thinking aloud, perhaps "Qemu" might be an answer ? Any ideas or opinions ?

Currently not knowing anything about "Qemu", myself, perhaps I need to move on from "Crossover". I'll wait however, for someone's advise first.

John,

I just stopped in to download Crossover Pro 6.0.2 and renew my subscription.

Hope you haven't given up.

I too am a long time InfoSelect fan since 1988. I have used it continually and daily since then in every job I have had. Right now I have it (ver. 2007 v. 38 I believe) up and running in crossover. Email & all in version 5.0.3 I believe. It works fine email and all. I run it on a Debian Linux called DreamLinux which is now my main distro since Libranet went belly up. I used to run InfoSelect in Win4Lin which was very Windows like. Trouble is it requires a Windows license & I am back with Win98.

The current situation(November 2008) has made a turn for the good.

Two months ago I moved to an Intel iMac computer and so far no regrets. I also downloaded the trial version of "CrossOver Mac", version 6.2.1, This was followed by the attempt to install Info Select 2007.0.42, the latest version at this time, and I am pleased to say that for roughly 95% of the time Info Select works fine.

There are a few quirks, but for an "unsupported" piece of software that is not bad.

I did have a little difficulty installing my old data, but this was overcome by a non-expert like me. Some of the commands in Info Select are not available in all displayed access points, but as there are usually more than one way of accessing a command , this can be overcome.

It is now my intention to buy CrossOver Mac in the hope that with CrossOver support for the first 6 months I will be able to have Info Select working 100% instead of only 95%. However, due to the fact that I am not a North American customer, there are snags with the CrossOver registration system that I am waiting for an answer from CrossOver so that I can complete my purchase

So far I must say thank you CrossOver

Now Dec 2008, I am still able to use Info Select regularly via CrossOver with all it's quirks in the new environment.

Basicly I manage by using the Info Select keyboard commands more, avoiding the "F" keys, and checking the "menus" more so than I have in the past under Windows XP.

Using CrossOver Mac 7.1.0 I also can confirm, as mentioned by others that as regards the WD2 files, the Info Select programme must be in the same list of files as the data, WD2 files, unlike the situation in Windows XP, where the data and programme can be in separate folders/directories.

Generally for Info Select 2007.00.42 try to use the keyboard short cuts for consistant reactions. On my Intel iMac the "F keys are MOSTLY problematic, also when used in combination with other keys, but there is usualy a keyboard work around. Familiarity will make this less of a problem.

Under CrossOver Mac 7.1.0 it's still not perfect, but still better than with previous CrossOver versions and still acceptable untill someone at CodeWeavers decides to make this a "supported" software or comes up with a newer version of CrossOver that is even more compatible with this particular Windows XP software.

The "search" command,in Info Select, searching over 100Mb of data that I have, works faster under CrossOver than in Windows XP.

I too have lost the body or message of mail in that the screen is blank.

As pointed out in the Tips, I will try reply to see if it reappears.

One other consistent problem: If you have renamed you deliveries to something more meaningful to you, kiss them good-bye once you read mail in them in crossover. They will revert to the first name & last name.

This means that when you open them again in Windows those titles will still be gone!

I didn't seem to lose anything else after a 2 hour foray last week. I have been using InfoSelect daily in a Windows environment since 1989.

Referring to the missing body of an e-mail

This quirk doesn't happen to all e-mails. Some appear quite normally without any problems.

I suspect, but do not know for sure, that it is might be due to the e-mail software used to compose and send the e-mail. Another possibility might be due to the e-mail format, whether 'HTML' or 'txt', again yet to be tested and proven.

For the time being though, clicking on the 'reply' icon brings up the missing body of the e-mail.

I now only use the iMac/Crossover mode to run Info Select. I avoid Microsoft, and in this case XP, as much as possible now, being truly content with my iMac and the Mac Leopard operating system.

I would welcome any comments and ideas from anyone who is addicted to Info Select and wanting to run it on an Intel Mac computer.

Coming back again to the problem that some e-mails do not show the body of the e-mail unless the 'reply' icon is clicked, I have discovered that this problem only arises if the e-mail's format is 'html'.

When the e-mail is in the 'plain text' format then the body of the e-mail shows up immediately on being downloaded.

Any ideas from anyone as to the reason for this, or a way to make 'html' formatted e-mails display the body of the e-mail as it does with the 'plain text format ?

a similar problem occurs in Outlook 2003 under Crossover. There, at least, the solution is to install IE6 into the same bottle as Outlook.
